The iron needs to be in a chelated form in order for the plants to use it JW.

When the pH is lower it doesn't need to be chelated so putting iron in would probably work. Many systems run at higher pH initially causing problems with iron uptake and requiring the chelated version of iron be added. Over time the pH comes down for most systems and it's less of a problem.

Strawberries do not like high salt if you ever have to salt your tanks.

This thread has been very informative..
One of my projected goals has been to include citrus. The requirements to run an AP system that will support the citrus has been a boon.
And the strawberries... oooh!

Ya'll floor me with the varied know-how and great spirit of sharing.

Thanks!

love this thread. it confirms everything that was taught to me but I want to add a bit of information into this thread. the RSG filter is effective but is a bit limited in longevity. but I found a way to incorporate the concept without jepodizing flowrates. its is done by utilizing a reverse flow filter design. in a RFF filter the sediments settle out at the base of the filter. by adding an atleast 5 to 7 inch layer of sand preferably fine sea sand. this layer of sand allows for the anaerobic bacteria to colonize and allow for the degasing of the nitrates. and since oxygenated water is always flowing above the sand level this prevent the formation of stagnant areas. the carbon source comes from the food fibres contained within the fish poo. after sometime a layer of fish waste will build up in the filter and from what a local farmer said is that this buildup is needed to start fermentation of the fish waste to release to stored nutrients in the solids into the water. normally ppl usually removes solids from their systems at a daily basis. but this leads to nutrient deficiency in your plants to occur because mineralization doesn't occur at such a fast rate. but by allowing the solid to build up in the filter leads to minerals entering into your system to a point that u don't have to supplement at no time. anaerobic digestion has so many advantages to aquaponics once I can contained properly.

I was thinking that adding an RSG filter to the bottom of an RFF filter would be good too. Then from the bottom of the RSG side, set up a drip system into the beds.

Trying a small RSG filter parallel with the outlet from my MBBF with a valve to control flow or turn off completely. I am interested to see if I will be able to manipulate denitrification with this thing at all.. Could possibly be a good spot to add calcium and potassium for a slow release into system.. 8-)

Agree with the bump.. Did anyone end up trying to put sand in the bottom of the RFF?
