Check out the guys at www.backsoldierflyfarming.com . They are local Aussies trying to design the equipment and methods to farm them all year round in Sydneys climate. You might find info on whether you temps are currently good for breeding etc.

You can import pupae and start a system outside of their normal breeding times, but you need to create a heated enclosure for he adults.

Whether your temps are warm enough anyway I wouldn't know.

You will find that BSF are not the only fly/larva that can be farmed in a pod!
Why waste time and money heating an enclosure when you can have similar results for free?

Yes, but I won't be growing house fly larvae on my small block. So for me, it's full BSF farming or nothing. I prefer to go with the nothing and wait till summer.

I any case. Check out that site. It has info on thE breeding temps for BSF and GSF so that you can decide whether to start your pod now or not.

Thanks Dr Luke, so its a case of putting up with house flies and BSF during winter? Anyone from Brisbane who breed BSF, In regards to your setup, do they shut down over winter here in or is it warm enough for them to keep going strong the whole year round?

If you get below about 26 degree all day during winter I would say you'll be putting up with NO BSF at all through winter. You MIGHT only get house flys.

I went ahead and set up a few weeks ago and within 15 minutes of dumping a heap of vegetable waste in I had a couple of Black Soldier Flies pay me a visit. Quite remarkable. Checked this morning nd while its not swarming with larvae there are quite a few that i can see... Its been pretty cold by Brisbane standards over the last few weeks so maybe I'll be able to keep it going over these colder months.
