We are encouraged to turn off our computers and go out into the real world. Lets see how much aquaponics we can get done on Sunday, or reading a book, or demolishing a BBQ with a sledge hammer (thats mine).

Why an Internet-Free Day?

- Because there's no replacing face-to-face interaction with real humans: we are social animals
- Because you can't get your five a day from e-mails
- Because you can't subscribe to an RSS feed from your grandma
- Because people's faces are clearer in reality than YouTube
- Because your Blackberry is surgically attached to your hand...
- Because we all need a bit of R&R: reality and reflection
- Because if this has riled you, you really need it....

Substance dependence
Below is an example of the kind of questions doctors use to assess whether someone has a substance-related problem and their level of dependency. However, these questions are just the starting point for a more thorough assessment.

Screening questions*
These questions concern the past 12 months.

Each question is answered 'yes' (1) or 'no' (0). The questions can be used for any substance. In this example we'll use aquaponics.

Did you find you needed a bigger aquaponics system to get the desired effect or that the same amount has had less of an effect?
Did you feel sick or unwell when the effects of aquaponics wore off or did you take more of it or a similar drug to relieve or avoid feeling unwell?
Did you search the internet for aquaponic related material in larger amounts or for a longer period of time than you intended?
Would you say that you've had a persistent or strong desire to build an aquaponic system or read the aquaponics forum?
Did you spend a large amount of time obtaining/using or recovering from the effects of aquaponic related activity?
Did you reduce or give up work, recreational or social activities as a result of your aquaponic project?
Did you continue with aquaponics despite having physical or psychological problems with it?


Outcome
If someone says 'yes' to three or more of these seven questions they're likely to be dependent on the substance assessed. It's also important to specify whether there are signs of physiological dependence (this means the person says 'yes' to question 1 or 2).

A day without the Internet, what a crazy thought !!
I might as well slash my wrists and watch my life's blood flow down the passage and be soaked up by the lounge-room carpet ( this sort of stuff happens when you build your own house instead of getting qualified people to do it)
The internet has connected me to the world, I was a bloody hermit until the WWW. came into my life !! It was me and my Norton against the world ( the motorcycle, not the anti-virus). Now I have a wife, lotsa kids,(who all use the Internet to connect with me - we are a spread-out family) and all you guys - whaddamigonnado without alla you guys for a whole day ?? I won't survive, I guarantee I won't live through the day without my INTERNET !!
Just in case I do survive, I'll read all about the hard times you conformists had, you traditionists, you fallers-into-line, you sheep who had a day off because some-one said you could, when you get back online on Monday.
In the meantime us revolutionaries, we, the little people who use the 'net as our umbilical cord, us little BATTLERS who don't have nuffin' except the net, we'll just carry on communicating - COZ WE GOT NUFFIN' BETTER TO DO !! -- and we'll be a day ahead of the rest of you !
