I siphoned yesterday! I like the idea of it just self managing......
The fish net is jammed into the rim pretty tight, it wouldn't float off (thank heavens or the FT would be overflowing with trout!)
Thanks for the info on the bulkhead fitting!

Bulkhead fittings may become more popular if we keep getting large weather systems arriving at night. Just make sure that the fish can't travel along the outlet. I used an inline filter, but anything that blocks solids would do.

Bythebrook, are bulkhead fittings different to tank outlets? I thought it was a US term for what we call tank outlets but now am not sure. :?

I believe bulkhead is actually the correct term/name for the tank outlet or double nut fitting. They also come in metal form. We use them at work for the hydraulic systems on underground machines.

I only found out what the correct name was when I asked at my local hardware store (not one of the chains) and the kind sales assistant told me. Otherwise I'd still be wandering the aisles.

Cheers, Charlie!
DandM, you have referred to your pool elsewhere as a concrete one but it looks as though it has a pale blue liner in it. Is it lined or painted concrete, or something else entirely? The reason I ask is that a friend has a 10,000l pool that begs for fish but she has been warned by a 'pool' person not to put fish in it because black spot algae will ruin it. I looked up black spot algae (thinking it may have been just a scare tactic to ensure further pool business) and see that it can be a real issue, gaining a foothold in the absence of chlorine. Apparently it mostly affects concrete or plaster finished pool surfaces.
Have you had any problems with it?

PLJ, yes we do have that I think. We certainly have algae on the pool surface (which is a blue Silasec painted surface on the concrete), but it didn't worry us if it caused permanent damage- we aren't planning on using it as just a sparkly blue swimming pool again!
If we absolutely needed too we could probably resurface with the silasec anyway.

Probably not worth the risk for a temporary addition of fish, but if they want fish more permanently it doesn't really matter!

How are your trees holding up out there? Ours are still upright, but lots for Bonnie to collect. :)

All is going very well! The growth in the aquaponics is amazing, and more than the same plants in the garden. The trout are happy and growing....though some of the plants are yellowing a bit...perhaps not enough nutrients?

In the pool we are trying trapping the perch....no success yet, but fingers crossed!

And today we harvested the biggest yabbies, and left dozens to grow out some more!
