Our plants are looking like they are missing something. They were yellowing a bit. So I was pleased with the trout, hopefully they will support the plants with what they need.

As I was a bit worried about the growth of the seedlings, I felt a most peculiar feeling when I saw a trout poo for the first time. I felt all warm inside, and looked at it as the saviour of my plants :love7:

And my SLO is working too fantastic. After feeding my trout some caterpillar, I found some survivers a minute later in the first growbed(next to some trout pellets). Not that they looked hungry after taking a dip in water of 12 degrees, but it is something to take into account.

Did you used seaweed extract to set up the system and bring nutrients in the setup?

Nope, we used biological plant fertiliser, and added some iron solution. The trout are eating OK, except for one, who has been limping about in the top of the tank.

PLJ, With respect aknowledged, we got a little carried away.

Dutchnewbie, last winter our system was non-existant. We started the build December last year and added the water May this year. The fertiliser we used during cycling was ordinairy ecological plant fertiliser. We also added some iron solution.

The trout pellets came with the trout, so I do not know the brand. They are quite small, about 2 mm. About the "magmadust" I have no info :dontknow: . Is it soluble in water? If not, and you add it to the system, it will end up somewhere somehow.

We had one trout limping about in the top of the tank from the start. The trout farm/nursery where we got the trout had some problems with high amm in combi with warm water during the hot weather some weeks ago. Most trout seemed fine, this one was a bit behind.

When I saw it swimming upside down the other day, I "helped" it to the other side.

So we are left with 8 trout. Currently amm and nititre readings are zero all the time, as they should. Nitrates are hovering around 25 mg/l. I would like to see this value higher, so am looking for some additional helpers.

Would it work if you just fed your trout a bit more each meal time? If they eat the extra then they produce more waste, if they don't eat it then you have more waste in the form of a bit of uneaten food, thereby increasing amm levels either way. I may be wrong but it seems logical to me.

Well it may work, but I do not feel very happy about trout food going in the growbeds instead of in the trout. As well as the eight fish in the tank were harrassing each other a bit, which I understood may be a result of understocking? And, ahem, it's a bit retorical all now, since we added 11 trout today
