Hey GD, I don't think it's necessary to scare people off on the main page with too many "rules" which are generally common courtesy and board etiquette. The first thing a person sees when they come to this board should not be the rules, I don't think this gives a real interpretation of what the board is about, or how it operates. This place is never going to be a highly policed board.

Perhaps a guidline of 'posting etiquette' could be included as part of an introductory email sent to all new users that sign up. Or sent out to those that might need reminding..

EB,

Upon reflection, I think you're right about the portal page......and I think that your suggestion re the email for new members is a good one.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you referred to rules.....

I note that there have been 476 visits to this post so it has clearly generated interest. When I looked at the list of people who have visited the site, I'm satisfied that your "common courtesy and board etiquette" message has gone where it's needed most.

Thanks for your understanding.

Gary

I like the e-mail idea, good thinking.

Tis a bit annoying trying to give a large dose of info in the one thread go away for the evening and hello, 2 pages of sidetrack.

Just for the record, I like the forum pretty much the way it is, but I will make an effort to confine my type of bulldust to the appropriate places.

My father was all-army, so I lived by the rules since I was 2 years old, and I got sick of it real quick - that's probably why I like this mob so much, easy-going, not too many rules.

By the same token, I wouldn't want this forum to degenerate into the usual chat-room cliquey insult sessions that most of them seem to have become. Those people must be descended from the idiots who ruined CB radio.

Make your rules, I'll either live with them or disappear.

Forgive me, I can't help be amused by how much chatter the "too much chatter" question has attracted

I guess I never looked around - too eager to get info - but I never saw the chatroom heading

It also took me a while to figure out what pm meant and to realise that it had a use. I guess I'll be learning how to use it now.

As someone who doesn't frequent other forums, those general guidelines of MF's were useful to me. I'd never thought about them, nor realised there was a "proper way" to do things in some cases.

And yes, as a newbie, I've found finding new info incredibly hard, 'cept for the well titled threads. That is primarily why I purchased THE BOOK. After reading the book, and taking time on the forum to find stuff, I probably wouldn't have bought the book if I'd been able to find the info easier. (oh dear, will I be forgiven for that one?!)

Eileen

Eileen, you've busted us, the obscene amount of banter was and edict by Joel, enforced and encouraged by me so that his book sales went up. Now we have to find another scam. ;)
