Technical support shorthand used to describe a common computer error caused by a user who has "no idea about what they are doing". An id10t error is one that the user usually will not admit responsibility for. For example, if a user calls tech support claiming their password will not work, but they in fact were mistyping the password, the tech support may note the caller's file or log the event as an id10t error.

and the best of all time!

Yesterday's Jam [1.1]
Roy: [picking up the phone] Hello, IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again? Uh... okay, well, the button on the side, is it glowing? ...yeah, you need to turn it on... uh, the button turns it on... yeah, you do know how a button works don't you? No, not on clothes.

Moss: [picking up the phone] Hello, IT.... Have you tried forcing an unexpected reboot?

Roy: No, no there you go, no there you go. I just heard it come on... no, no, that's the music you heard when it come on... no, that's the music you hear when... I'm sorry are you from the past?

Moss: See the driver hooks a function by patching the system core table, so its not safe to unload it unless another thread's about to jump in there and do its stuff, and you don't want to end up in the middle of invalid memory! [chuckle] Hello?

Roy: Oh really? Then why don't you come down and make me then. Huh, what you think I'm afraid of you? I'm not afraid of you. You can come down here any time and I'll be waiting for you! [slams down phone] That told her!

The guy wouldn't have got 30 seconds of my time before I would have hung up on him and advised the supervisor of what happened.

Thankfully I haven't had to do that sort of support for many years.

When they called me, the thing that amazed me was how obvious it was that they were from India. Most of the time you talk to tech support from India, you cannot tell. The good help desks must spend a fortune on dialect coaches. I also found it funny how obvious it was that they were reading from a script.

SWMBO must have a Dell for her next contract (it's a long story) so we bought the 13" ultra-book; I'm so excited about having it</sarcasm> it's been sitting in the unopened box for about a week now, and will probably remain there for a few more weeks before idle curiosity gets the better of me to actually switch the thing on for the first time.

All credit where it's due though, we have had HP, Toshiba, Lenovo and Compaq laptops, and we keep revisiting Dell because they are one of the least worst machines for our needs and price range.

This is my personal list of notebook manufacturers ordered by quality of the physical device.
This is based on all the computers I have fixed/selected for puchase for many people.
I use a HP for work, but we only use those because they have PROPER serial ports on them, very rare these days...

At 150 dollars my acer has been a rock star. Of course I only use it for things that I can't use the iPad for, like sketchup.

Wouldn't the apple just mean you need itunes and Apples permission to do everything ;)

of course you will always have people that have good experience with the cheaper brands, and people who have bad experience with the better brands. All brands have failures, but the cheaper brands have more, is all.

Also the better brands make some dud models, and vice versa...

pot luck for the unwary unfortunately...

I watched an interesting doco last night about the super giants of technology, interesting stuff.. Apple are trying to follow the lines of religion, even creating shops with religious overtures, stone features, alter like counters and evangelistic type hyping at store openings.

Check out this store opening, there must be over 50 staff and they spend the whole time yelling, screaming, clapping and dancing. Check this out from about the 1:30 mark onwards.

People travel from all over the world to be at a shop opening.. It's all a bit weird. :geek:

Then there's Sony, who lost the battle of VHS and Beta all those years back. The next big battle was Blue Ray vs HD DVD, Sony didn't want to lose again, they wanted their format to take over. So they sell PS3's for actually less than what they cost to produce, making massive losses on the hardware sales..

Why?

They are putting Blue Ray players into every home, under the guise of a games machines, now they can't possibly lose, Blue Ray wins, Sony makes back billions in the long run as it's now the accepted format world wide for all movies, blank media and multimedia, they collect their cuts from every sale..

Scariest is going to be google and how that pans out in the future, all controlling, all knowing.. :dontknow: :?

wow, that is weird.. almost cultish.

Yeah scary indeed. Sony has been at it for ages alright. Just about every storage device they come out with is proprietry. Many of their products only use Sony type storage. eg cameras using sony memory stick etc...
Many times they fail...

This is done by microsift as well. It certainly isnt a Sony only trait. In fact microsoft lost hundreds of millions of dollars before the xbox turned a proft. The reason is that you make money off the games and both microsoft and sony know that.

Blu Ray was alway going to win IMHO. You can store alot more data on it which will draw in movie companies etc that release HD content. A TV series these days in HD will only get 3 episodes on a disc.

Not that i am a sony fan though... It shits me how you have to buy a sony memory card that nothing else uses...

PS I love the IT crowd. The scene where Moss has to act out facing up to the bullies had me in tears!
