Hi guys .

Well , after 3 trouble free years fishwise , Ive hit the wall . Ive just walked in the house after a couple of weeks at work up north to the news that some of my Trout have a a white coating on them , about 6 or 8 of them according to SWMBO . I havent seen them yet (its dark ) , but i'm immediately thinking 6kg of salt going into my 2000 ltr's tomorrow .

Anything else I should be looking at ?

Sorry to hear that you have an outbreak there Prawnz. Salt is definitely your best friend in this situation. Keep your pump running 24x7 for a few days to go with the salting process. Where did you get the trout from for this season??

Yeh got the 24 hour thing going on , was just wondering if there was something else , like have I got the ratio of salt right ? Or perhaps is there a fungicide that is commonly used , assuming its a fugus of course .

Assuming you want to keep your plants 2kg (maybe 3) would be about all I would add to your system.

If you want to give them a higher dose you could get hold of another container fill it up with some water (perhaps from your system) give it higher dose for 30 mins and then return the fish and water to your system where it would be diluted.

Thanks Arbe , lucky I saw this before I put 6kg in . So what PPT would 2kg in 200 ltr give me ? (im terrible with this sort of math )
So if I was to get my 150 ltr esky and put 2kg of slat in it then the fish , would that be to high a concentration for them ?

I am terrible at maths too but I would think 2kg in 150 litre esky would be a high concentration.

But if 1kg in 1000 litres is 1ppt, then 1kg in 100 litres will be 10ppt.

1kg (1000g) of salt per 1000L gives 1ppt
or
1g per 1L gives 1ppt

So,

2000g in 200L gives you 10ppt


2000g in 150L gives you 13.333ppt

I'd start around 8ppt (1200g in 150L) in well aerated water and see how the fish respond to that first.

Make sure it's pure salt (pool salt or similar) not table salt.

That looks like a nasty disease :S

Geez Prawnz,

At the risk of making a wrong call here I would go for a 3-4ppt and put 3-4kg into your tank. I won't hurt your fish, plus if you lose a few strawberry plants its not a big loss compared to the fish situation. Keeping them in that salt solution for an extended time would be my view on the approach as this sounds a bit nasty. Your fish wont mind that level.

So how does one get this type of disease ? Is it a sign of weak fish or quality problem , or is it just a thing perhaps ?

You might want to give Gavin a call to get his opinion about the situation. Given you got them from Ferguson (assuming he sold them to you????), he might know the origins and best solution.
