Thanks for the info Ron & Ruth! I think i might have a few capsy fruits coming on in the top 30cm but i will take it down as far as i can. The wind today has given them a hard time and i didnt have time to tie them up before i left for work. Hopefully the survive till morning when i get home

Growth update 26/4/12



You can see the wind has been giving the capsicum a hard time. Will try and tie it up tomorrow.



Caterpillars are starting to hatch. My little minnows make short work of them though For some reason my silverbeet doesnt seem to grow like anyone elses. I dont think i planted it deep enough...



Carrots starting to germinate.



A few of my Jalapenos coming along. Finally starting to get a decent crop. Tried my first ones from it since it has been in the AP last night and there was no spice to it at all Just tasted like a really small green capsicum

What do people usually use for air when they are transporting their fish?

I am hoping to pick up 15 trout next week from perth and it will be around 4 - 5 hours in the car. I have an air compressor but i dont know if that pushes any oil out of the air line...

I modified a 12VDC BYAP air pump to run from the car cigarette lighter (the internal battery is stuffed)

I got one of these and added 4m of cable and and a cigarette lighter plug and worked a treat. Some plugs have an internal fuse for that extra level of geek. You can then use it as a backup of your backup air supply.

If i wasnt so disorganised that would have been perfect thanks James. I ended up getting the BYAP battery backup pump that bunson mentioned and charged it up. It did the job

So it finally happened. Well 2 things. Firstly i finally got the BYAP. My 5 minute call in turned into a 30 minute visit that was way to short. Could have spent hours there chatting away Secondly i finally got some trout 12 of them to be precise upone BYAp recommendation. (much to my embarresment i didnt catch the name of the bloke i spoke to.)

They poo alot. They arnt really taking pellets yet, but they have been powering through the gambrusia i caught a few weeks ago. Water tests have been all good so far which i am glad about seeing as they are self regulating their feed so far. I am just waiting for them to start eating my yabbies.

So fun times ahead. It will be interesting to see how the plants go now.

p.s. how are the trout travelling so far?

Sounds like Carl. Would have stayed for ages talking but had to drive back to Dongara.

Trout are looking good so far. Had a few hits on pellets yesterday but there is plenty of food in the tank

Did a quick water test before i left for work this morning. Amm and nitrites are 0. So i threw in a handfull of pellets.

It looks like dosing heavily with peeponics for a month before getting the trout has payed off.

It is hard to be discreetly checking BYAP at work when you are trying not to laugh..

Amm: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 160+

Looking good.

I also re-positioned my wave maker/water mover/no head pump thingy a bit and it has helped clear the bottom of the tank up. Still a bit of crap there but alot better than it was. Damned dirty trout

I really enjoy your thread Ryan. Simple and prosperous system.

As you know the trout make a mess, your set up reminds me of my first and I experienced this exaxt same issue with my trout. Lots of suspended solids.

I never found a perfect solution but the best I could do was to circulate the water with a secondary pump and have my main pump in the centre of the FT (to pick up the waste).

Also I switched to CF at that stage and I havnt gone back to flood and drain since.

These 2 things helped a bit but I penciled it down to trout being filthy and the square nature of an IBC. Im still not real sure.

Unfortunately i havnt had my camera for the last few weeks but i got it back today. So i will try and get a few more pics up soon. I had my first fully AP grown chilli harvest the other day. Jalapenos they were and the taste was amazing. Surprisingly there was no heat in the flesh of it. Only the seeds.

The only thing i wish i could change was to have it more exposed to light. Unfortunately being a rental, that really isnt an option. I look forward to the day where i can change the garden as i see fit. AP everywhere!
