A place to discuss aquaponics

Can anyone tell me what is required to stock fish in backyard tanks? Do I need a permit and from where? Is there any legislation? what fish am I alowed to stock? I live in Birkdale in the Redlands shire, south East Queensland.

Never heard of a permit for backyard tanks but maybe the best thing to do is contact the shire or council, they should have the info you need on hand.

I don't think the requirement for a permit is for a fish tank - rather for the fish species. The hatcheries require licences and need to validate your area as to whether the fish are cleared (the DPI would be the place to check with).

Licences/permits would be required if you were going to sell fish - what type of fish are you going to keep?

Ap, In Qld you can keep species that are permitted, but not native to your area in tanks. The tank MUST be covered by a roof, the logic being that if there is a downpour (we have not seen one of those for a while) and the tank was to overflow then fish not native to your area may escape into the local waterways.
No permit is required until you have a tank surface area of 70 sqm and upwards.
For example, Jade Perch are not native to Brisbane waterways, you cannot keep them in a dam, but you can keep them in a secure covered tank.

Aussie, I don't have a permit, but had to answer a lot of questions when I bought my fish (is the tank covered, is it near a creek etc)

Jaymie, Have not got a tank or fish yet but it will be indoors and is at least 100 meters from a canal.

I'd say you'll be fine then! Those were the questions from the hatchery, I would suppose they are part of their licensing agreement with DPI
