Hi,

I have a BYAP courtyard system that is approx 5 months old. I have silver perch currently but am recieving some trout early next week. I have 6 that are plate size and I will harvest these. I have 17 that are well under plate size that I would like to keep. I have an empty BYAP growbed that I previously used as a yabbie tank and I was thinking if it is possible to use this as a fish tank.
I would add an air pump , probably cover with shadecloth , use floating baskets .
Probably water changes required.

Do you think this is possible ? Any advice would be appreciated .

Interesting question Paul, I've never tried keeping them in something that shallow, but if they are only small and they have some protection they may be ok...

Im currently setting up a partition in my FT using plastic mesh to seperate SP and trout - not sure if it going to work yet but will give a go and let you know. I use a small pump to swirl the FT water so hopefully the floating pellets will keep revolving until eaten. See how we go.

It'll be feasible, but you'll need to keep a close eye on your ammonia levels, which can be a bit of a pain in the ass.

Feed 'em worms whenever you can as they will survive in the water if it's well aerated, they won't rot, and the SPs will eat them at leisure.

Im only getting 5 trout chilli

just enough to tick the system over through winter. Im not into big numbers these days, its more about the vegies for us.

It gets real cold here and my SP dont feed - well very minimal anyways.

Would the trout and silvers go together in one tank without the division? if you only had a few silvers?

This has been discussed quite a bit in the past and I think generally members havnt had much luck although there is some that have been able to keep them together.

Trout will eat silvers if they are small enough (see OBO's avatar) in a lot of cases but also they can also chase them and stress them out. Ive read of trout biting the tails of the bigger SP they cant eat too.

I dont think too many would encourage it.

I've gone 120 trout this year Charlie - and should be eating the last of last year's batch this coming weekend !

Would love to see how you are partitioning the FT Charlie. Have thought of doing the same but logistically haven't solved that problem yet. Please post pics on your finished product.

so far so good, there is one that keeps slipping through to the SP side but he wont get through much longer

Nice going Charlie, I will attempt to create something similar (next season). I have put trout in with a few SP to see (experiment with the situation) and have had my first casualty this morning. Not too sure if there is a method of separating the SP from the trout at this stage or to just monitor it and prepare for next season (unless someone has a separation technique that they can recommend!

Obviously still an experiment at this stage so time will only tell. So far so good.

Other than what I have done are you able to get another tank or sump tank or something to plum up in line to seperate?

If the trout dont eat the SP its possible they may still chase and stress them.

I have read of others keeping them together with success but I have lost SP to them in the past and dont want that playing on my mind while Im at work.

True, true Charlie. Not keen on the veracious attitudes of the Trout doing in the SP. My issue now would be how to separate them from each other. Any ideas?

Do you have a system link with photos Borby so we can have a look at your set up, might be able to give suggestions after a visual.

I don't get it - what's wrong with using a net ?
