Hello peoples :)

I've stumbled on this forum after trying to register over at another one but apparently not being a suitable candidate for theirs and having my account deleted... I hope I receive a warmer reception here heh...

Anyways I watched BBCs House of the Future recently and saw it featured Aquaponics. I then remembered seeing it years ago on some show here in oz and have decided I'd like to give it a go.

Having sponged what I can from various videos, online articles and forums I still have some questions and would be eternally grateful if anyone has some answers for me.

1. Is it feasible to build an outdoor system which will grow plants in winter without building a greenhouse in Sydney?
2. Where do I find either a really cheap system, or where's the cheapest place to buy used food grade IBCs in Sydney?
3. Assuming I don't really have anything other than a drill, hands, hacksaw and a brain, what do I need to get a simple system set up and what would be my ballpark minimum outlay?

Welcome,

Yeah, forum moderators can be hard a$$es sometimes can't they!

Not sure about growing in Sydney etc. but make sure you grab the IBC of Aquaponics PDF from the website or this URL if it works.

My Guess:

1IBC $60-100
Fittings $40-80
Pump with battery backup $80 (BYAP)
River Gravel $40 1/3m³
Seeds ????
Gold fish $5 for 10
Scrap timber
Blood, Sweat & hopefully no tears

Well I have to say I dont like your attitude tcshad! And I dont want you on our forum either!!

Just joking mate, we welcome you with open arms :wave1: Your in the right place to start out so you have that covered, you can try sourcing IBC's from wholesalers, gumtree, ebay and industrial area's and alike.

And as 4xjbh pointed out - download the IBC of aquaponics and it has all the info you need to sart out a IBC system and all related information.

Happy hunting and keep the questions coming.

hi and welcome
pity house of the future didnt focus more on the aquaponics stuff, it may even have hurt it a bit cause they focused on that one system, but unlike that system aquaponics can be done very cheaply by using gumtree and ebay and the old art of skip diving (amazing how many things like baths and water tanks get thrown out)

I think it was that they had their registration set up requiring answers for location, job and a bunch of other personal information I didn't particularly feel like sharing with a random forum on the internet...

This is the email I got:

Dear tcshadow,

Unfortunately your registration at Practical Aquaponics Discussion Forum. A place to discuss every aspect of Aquaponics. did not meet our membership requirements. Therefore your registration was deleted.

Sorry,

Welcome tcshad, luckily this is a very friendly forum where we don't care what colour underwear you have on or when your last bowel movement was :) And its full of all the realistic information that you need to get your system up and running as well as solving almost any problems you might come across, GL in your soon to be addiction.
