Bit of an update. My plants aren't looking too healthy. I'm pretty sure it's to do with a lack of sunlight so in the few hours I had to spare after getting home from a weekend away I started to rectify the problem.

It looks heaps brighter already and I only finished removing the colorbond at about 6pm so hopefully it will get enough light during the day now to keep the plants healthy. Hopefully get a few hours to spare next weekend to put up the clear sheeting.

My water has also cleared up nicely and some of the seeds I had sown have germinated.

Bit of an update. System is getting closer to being cycled. Have been using humonia. Last test was ph 8 ammonia 0.25 nitrites 2 nitrites 160. Hopefully pick up some fish in two weeks. Veges are starting to pick up a bit too with all the nitrates
I also finished the poly carbonate roofing the other day too.

Thanks kevyrev. That is the plan. For that section of the verandah anyway! Would like to add another growbed to my courtyard sytem and then have another small system for fingerlings.

Here is a chart of the progress of my system so far -

A couple of notes I'll add which may exclain a few things with the chart -
1) I didnt have a test kit for two weeks;
2) I overdosed on humonia at the start and figure for ammonia and nitrite were off the chart (see 1 above);
3) I did a number of water changes to bring ammonia down as it was 8+ for a long time.

So from what I have read salting to 1ppt (ie 1kg into 1000L tank) is generally good practice?

Things are starting to pick up. Vegies are growing well and trout feeding well
I also got busy and built a BSF harvester inspired by one I saw on youtube and one that iceman built. Hopefully it works and I can suplement my fish feed with BSF.

This is the ramp and drain at the bottom

Not sure if the tube in the bottom of the barrel will work..
As I have to think that the bottom of the tube will be under the material in the barrel..

That was why I thought the escape for the lava was open..

Nice job on the BSF compost / harvester .........I hope you get it working....I am in need of tips ( and many have been given ) to make my BSF bin work, but alas, it still doesn't work up here......i look forward seeing your progress !!

Yeah I'm not sure if it will work either Only time will tell. The height of the tube can be adjusted so I can raise it to the top of the material in the bucket to hopefully the right height for BSF larvae to enter the escape hatch.



Thanks Jessy. Maybe the climate in Exmouth is too nice for BSF to survive Maybe this time of year will be cool enough for them up there.
