I had to put a mesh over the outlet AFTER I filled it with water.

Tricky.

No doubt you've already thought of it, but I'd kick myself for not mentioning it if your haven't.

Sweet! There is always a way to do something. Was wondering how to make my IBC drain thing work out.

Will have to wait for lunch break to paw through my plumbing parts to see if I have one of those, and one of these, and to see if that works with this...

Thanks Mr Bill

Slowly getting there. Have now covered new FT with shade cloth and framed top edge, ready for lid.

Framing for lid is now all done. Lid is made up of three pieces. One small section for water inlet.
A main lid for maintenance. Medium lid for daily feeding.

Image

Lid material is acrylic. I found a disused sign, from a fish and chips shop. Owner was happy for me to take it away. The vinyl graphics peeled off the acrylic without any problems.

Image

The alevin tank now has some of its outlet pipe work fitted and also has an internal outlet filter, to stop the little critters going into the grown-ups tank.

Image

Filter is a piece of 75 mm pipe with reducer to 50 mm. 75 mm pipe has 9 x 50 mm holes in side and fibreglass fly wire glued on with silastic. Top collar is glued on 80mm pipe over fly wire.
Filter is quite large as I don't want to be cleaning it too often. Fittings are simply pushed on for easy maintenance. Solids will need to be siphoned out periodically.

Thanks Dan for the kind comments.

Please note that I am only using a filter in that tank due to the alevin being so small, about 2.5 cm. In the main FT, the outlet is free. This allows the solids to make their way out.
As the alevin get larger, a coarser filter will be used. This coarser filter will lie along the bottom to allow the pickup of some solids. Having a filter is a pain as it needs cleaning.

I have glued all the 'important' pipe work with silicon. The rest are just pressed fitted.
The important pipes are the 50 mm pipe outlets. The silicon will seal just fine but... it also allows the pipes to be pulled apart if needed for rework. One needs to apply a lot of force to release the glued pipes, once the silicone has set.

Im dam sure your system is going to take quite high rankings in a thread we had some time back that was started by a fella by the name rosco.

He joined on Jan 21st 2011 and he posted 7 times, his last post was a thread creation called "Are all aquaponic systems Ugly?" and you guessed it - it started a bit of a bashing... but, without his loose lipped thread we may not have brought all the extra pretty systems all together into one thread to show off some creativness. So we thank him for that... rosco's last post was on the 31st Jan 2011 - 10 days after his first.... he is still a welcomed member.

Heres the link:- viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8924&hilit=systems+ugly

enjoy

im planning on breeding guppies for feed, and with any luck maron for food for me. so your filter screen will work very well for both. tho there is a good chance ill be growing/breeding them inside in one of my spare aquariums. so your filter will work with both quite well.

awesome. the PVC ive used in aquariums is fairly limited, but generally just pressed together as well. usually under vacuum not under pressure. glad you can silicone joins so you can still pull them apart.

Struth!! Thanks Charlie. Thats very kind of you.
I checked out your post a short while ago. I really enjoyed your photos. You have done so much work!! :headbang:

The J almost brought tears to my eyes. I did my apprenticeship back in the late 70s, on Holdens. At one stage, and as a teenagers, I had 3 FJs. When I saw your ute, I could almost smell the inside. Those oldies have a special smell.

Thanks again mate :D Will check the Rosco dude.

The problem now is that I will be even more self conscious of the work I do :)
