I have seen a lot of comments on posts that "metal" of any kind should be should be avoided in an AP setup. Leeching and all that stuff!

hey Sam..

Brass is made from copper/zinc Both metals are poisonous, heavy metals that are toxic to fish..

brass and copper are whats generally used in all drinking water taps and pipe etc. i believe copper is also needed by the human body to be healthy.

it sounds like the old "radiation is dangerous" hysteria. its not so much if your subjected to it or not that is the problem, its only when you are subjected to an unnatural amount of it that it starts to become an issue.

i think copper, zink and brass once in a solid lump (like a pipe or a tap) dont leach into the water in any noticeable way.

happy to be proven wrong if someone else can find a study or something saying otherwise. i did a bit of looking and couldnt see anything that said different. all the "poisoning" info i found was about eating or inhaling copper dust etc.

Dan, both copper and zinc are relatively "soft" metals... and dissolve quite readily in acidic water... which AP systems often are...

Whereas our drinking water is rarely acidic...

Concerns about copper/zinc/brass... in relation to human health... have lead to much of the older pipes in houses being removed... and all new houses tend to use PE piping...

Remember also... that AP systems are recirculating... and fish readily accumulate and concentrate "metals" into their flesh.... which we then eat.... potentially leading to higher exposures than by other means....

But the greatest conerns with such metals in AP systems... aren't relate to human health...

They quite simple kill FISH... and quite rapidly....

I think you'll find that the stainless hose clamp will corrode away reasonably quickly.. not the strap bit, but the rest of it, the little screw bit etc (if it has that, can't see detail), mine did anyway..
