First, you did install Google Sketchup... correct? I've had users confuse downloading with installation because download a song or movie will fire up Windows Media player but programs need to be installed.

If not done, find the file you downloaded and double click it to install it. After that finishes you can double-click the .skp file (the component download) and it will open in sketchup.

Otherwise the most likely reason is what's called default extension program. Use Win Explorer (Click [Start] [Computer] for Win7 or Click [Start] [My Computer] for WinXP) to find one of the components then right-click it and choose [Open With]
That brings up a box that let's you choose what to open the file with. Chose Sketchup and make sure the box for [Always use this program] is ticked. You might have to browse to find sketchup - if so it usually install s to (for Win7) C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google SketchUp 8
or (for WinXP) C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 8

The file you need is called Sketchup8.exe (the Application one)

Choose it and click OK and make sure the [Always use] is ticked...

Hope that helps
