I wish I could help!
I want to see some barra again..
maybe don't put the entire stock in or just buy some sacrificial fish (GOLDIE's) till you nip up the problem.

regards
Matt

I have 6 goldies, 5 very small bass and two larger jades in there, with a 300w heater. The goldies were in there for two weeks with no deaths and were eating ok, so I netted out the bass, to put in there hoping they would get more food with less competition. A while later the jades were in big trouble in the community tank with the temps going below zero on successive nights, so they went in too. All still alive but just not happy
Have turned off the rhubarb bed and still not sure if this could be a problem, and put a couple of bags of activated charcoal under two the the gb inlets.
This system is doing my head in, as its produced two crops of fish and countless vegies over the last year

A bit over a week ago I think. and they were stressed from the cold so not expecting them to be very lively, as with the small system and heater, it only gets to around 13-14C. It may be ok and maybe just the winter temps that are slowing them down, but even the silvers in the big system are munching on lettuce leaves, and these two jades wont touch one I threw in there
I guess I am just worrying too much, but after two lots of trout carking it ....................

Know anyone with a mass spectrometer or one of those type machines? Maybe someone that works at a university, lab, or private company would trade a case of special Matis brewski for a specialised water test. Or a friend of a friend.
Never know until you ask, ... and ask, ... and ask. Then boom. You found someone.
Tis a small world, my friend.
Luck

Well all is good in this system and I have expanded with two new beds to take the GB volume up to about 950L. Have 16 Jades in there chomping through 80g of feed daily plus lettuce leaves.
Plants are going off ,and the two rockmelon vines have 15 fruit formed and growing at last count.
Picked this baby this morning, and have had some with home made ice cream

Glad to hear your system is firing on all cylinders again mantis. Did you ever work out what caused your trout deaths?

Sorry didnt see the replies
Rsevs3, still dunno why the trout carked it but guessing stress and no salt in the system didnt help. Also white spot etc from the first supplier

Any hoo, gunna have to move my murray cod from the aquarium in the shed to this system tomorrow, as the canister filter on the aquarium shat itself tonight.
Looks like some of the jades will have to give themselves up for the dinner plate to make way

The plans of mice and men

And two just did. 370g so not bad. Was hoping to get them bigger but this year they have not fed regularly like the jades did last year. But they are a good size for us.
And jeez these fish are fatty, as their guts was full of fat and I had to scrub the chopping board , knife and my hands in hot soapy water to get the grease off.
They taste good though :D
