And I suspect the constant flood system in the BYAP trial only floods to about 25-30mm below the media surface...

I've got some oregano that kept going in constant flood. The best oregano plant I have is in the high side of a timed bed (high side, as in I didn't compact the ground well enough under all the blocks so one side has settled a little and is wetter than the other side.)
I have noticed that some oregano I have transplanted seems to take very well while other bunches just die.

Remember you can also run some beds on autosiphons with constant flood. In my big system I have one byap bed and one black tub on cf and the same on autosipon.
Cabbages love cf so I reckon all brassicas would and havent seen any difference with onions , strawberries, and a few others.

I switched all my beds to CF. I prefer it now. I can grow everything I was growing before. It is better for a pond system where you do not want the water level to fluctuate.

I think this thread should have been "plants that don't grow in CF", because almost everything grows in CF and it is difficult to list everything.

What was the one that didn't grow in the BYAP trials, fennel? Not something I would ever grow anyway...

Hey Mantis,

I'll be raising 25 strawberry plants (Seascape) in a tube system like yours. But I need to ask some questions about your system.

Distance between plants?

If the mother plants have 6 inch roots in the beginning does that mean 3 inches are in water all the time?

How big are your cups, 3 inches in diameter?

Can you offer any other insights to get going?

More CF beds coming online thanks to the LEAP research. I'm glad to see the tomatoes, strawberries and peppers like it. Has anybody had any success with scallions (green onions)? They do great in soil here, but failed twice in AP-both times indoors though. I might try them again outside.
How about cucumbers?
What about citrus trees?

I can almost guarantee that all onions from shallots to big red bulbs like constant flood.
I have had a batch of flat leaf parsley where some have rotted at the roots, but two plants have done ok. I think with some plants just keep the woody bulb of the roots above the flood line.
Picked a big broccoli head tonight for dinner from a CF bed, and thats not bad for broccoli grown over summer eh
I reckon with CF you have to be careful to keep the flood level below the rocks completely, and maybe 10mm more than usual. The plants will find the water
