Encouraged by Dandm's post about catching a couple of silvers in their big pool by fishing for them, I tried in my tank. Put on a no. 4 hook and squashed the barb down and second cast with worms got this one. Not the biggest in there but when cleaning him he was full of skrettings pellets so obviously one of the food hogs :D
505g whole and 410g gutted and gilled

Yeah , I am really pleased that I got them this far. The missus and I wont ever forget trying to get them out of the planted aquarium where they started off as wee 4-5cm fingerlings. We had a hell of a time with a net each and everything pulled out of the aquarium. We had great pleasure eating one of them finally :D

Hooked another silver of the same size just before and this time fileted it and skined it and ended up with two 120g filets. Would like to catch one of the bigger ones as I reckon they would be 750g or more

Yeah they are great fish and grow pretty well too. Mine would be about 150-200mm now after 14 months but have had to compete with 25 bigger silvers for food. Will be interesting to see how they grow over the next 12 months as I pull the big silvers out over the next couple of months

That has to be one of the coolest underwater fish vid's Ive ever watched Mantis!

Watched it 3 times with my little fella - loved it.

What make of camera are you using?

Good work on the big silvers too mate, I know what its like to have them for what seems like an eternity. Must make the feed so much more appreciative. I still havnt eaten one yet, how do you find the taste?

Only tried the one I got last week and I did him whole in foil in the barby. Taste was good
This one I will try tommorow night (with yabbies I hope), fried in garlic butter. He was just as easy to filet and skin as a redfin which is good

Nice.

Have you been doing pickled yabbie tails yet mate?

Ive got a vinegar/chilli/tabasco/salt/pepper/sugar mix that I have been using for years, same liquid just soak tails for a few weeks then drain out tails and re-use liquid. Over the years it has become this beautiful (and hot) seasoned treasure that - in my eyes - is worth a million. I bring a jar into work now and then and give them to friends. Makes your eyes pop and you cant stop going back for more.

Im sure you have your own recipe...

Tried pickling some last year but I reckon I cooked them too long, as in the normal time. Then the hot vinegar cooked them more and they became a bit tough, chewy like. Someone on here mentioned boiling them till they just changed colour then wipping them out, then pickle. Might give that a go, if we get enough
Your recipe sounds yummo
