Yea this is fairly old Keith, 1994-97.

Its all to do with controlling over population of farm dams, which is the biggest restriction on growth versus time. An all male population keeps numbers down in turn sees growth rates increased.

yeah, i noticed the date.. lots of hybrid discussion of bluegill in the states... some folks think they get bigger, but quite a few recent studies show that they equal out after about 18 months,, i always thought it was to have higher population of males to keep the population under control..
