Hi all,

A late intro from me, but since I've started posting, I'd better do my 2c.

Phil from Perth, SOR :funny1: (don't hold that against me). Am building atm, and the current place just has no appreciable space for aquaponics :support: . Am changing that with me new digs, hopefully in October 2012.

Going for IBC based system, starting with Silver Perch if possible. Have read through the forums and I think, spending most of my daytime cruising the net for aquaponic related guff. I don't have 'green' thumbs, but I hope they'll at least be 'wet' thumbs soon, and the 'green' will follow after naturally  .

That's all from me for now, but I'll be online alot more when I've got something more to show for it.

Cheerio :wave1: ,
aquanoob.

oh, and not least, thanks to all the contributors on this forum, every day, there's something new to occupy my time; all those people know who they are, so thank you. Lots of funny stories (and at times not so), and good advice.

It's not just invaluable info (gotta love them pictures), but also gave me a chance to try and convince the Minister of Finance to approve funding for something that wouldn't spoil her new place. I just have a little corner (literally) to work in.

I'll be looking forward to making my journey to BYAP and thank Faye and Joel in person when I'm ready to officially make that plunge later this year.

I'm building in Rossmoyne atm to get a little more space for the aquaponics than where I'm in now. Living nearby tho. Meantime, storing and testing out bits and pieces (ie. backup power, barrelponics maybe later).

And the last time I checked with, the guy that cut my hair said all I needed for my vanity was some hair dye ;)

:wave1: ROFL :wave1: hi ho neighbour (or soon to be in late 2012).

I've just been advised today that I'm being moved into 'Construction' now, and that times are tough in the building industry, so my place may be starting sooner than 'normal' (whatever that means).

Anyway, back to my aquaponics ... got the 2x Blue Barrels, and will try to get something growing soon-ish before I move - maybe hunt around the swan/canning river for some gambusia or feral ornamentals. Don't suppose I need a WA rec fishing license for that, do i?

If you need another blue barrel, laundry trough, EPDM pond liner I got some I need to get rid of for cheap.

Apparently there is carp around Kent st Weir

Charlie,

Well, I pretty much was going to use a bait trap from 2L soda bottle or something like that. I actually went to the Swan ECO Trust place in Kent St, Cannington to ask, and the 'ladies behind the counter' said, "You can't take anything from the river. It's all protected."
Second line was "You'll need to get a recreational fishing license." :upset:

My response, "I don't think what I'm looking to get will bite on a hook/line as they're the size of my thumb (if that), and they're not for 'human consumption'. :laughing3: "

I called Fisheries after their 'helpful response', and got a guy who pretty much said, I'd need a license to fish, but the moment I told him they'd be tiny things you couldn't catch with line/hook and I wouldn't be using a net, a pregnant pause and then a cautious answer, "well, you'd then have to talk to Fremantle Fisheries Marine Officer - as I can't advise you on the compliance of it all... " :drunken:

I got the feeling that, "wtf  , just go get it, it's not any of those fish listed in our license docs and they're not as if you're eating them" :) but of course, he can't say that.. but was helpful in pointing me to the next political red tape.

I left it at that and thought it was just too much hassle. :upset:

As another thread about translocation details with Fisheries, all the good intentions are there, but the execution and clarity to the typical Joe is an ongoing process.

Guess I'll need a license to 'fish' for carp then :D

Yeah, got a guy who's supposed to be obtaining some aqualiner for me, I'm assuming it'll be equivalent to the pondliner. See if he pulls through for me there. I'll then think if I'm building GBs or FTs/STs with it. Refining my sketchup skills now ;)

Generally the rule of thumb is that you can't take things home alive, you need a special licence. However, I would think that if you are collecting non native species and you have some idea what you are talking about if anyone should happen to ask you questions, then you should be ok...

Just explain that you are helping to clean up the water ways by removing fish that don't belong there... Not advisable to try and take home black bream or other native species though, not unless they are dead and legal limit. :)

Ah thanks for the clarity there.

Well, I'm just starting out, and was looking for a little kickstart to barrelponics. Wasn't going for anything big or 'table-friendly'. But hey, the idea of taking up carp fishing (helping to remove a pest from the waterways) to take up some time sounds like a fine idea to me.

Just wondering if that stuff is worth eating from the Swan... ... i ate it in my younger days, but i never got to see how they prepared that fish.

Finally got the system up and running.
Pics in the system thread. :D

Cycle, cycle and speed up this process with a bit of borrowed 'nutrient water' from FuzzyM's system.

Only waiting for some small bits and bobs (ie. air pump/line), and of course, the fish.
Going to whack the backup battery/UPS to tie to the air pump by the end of the month.
Slow and steady...
