aquaddict the fires are 2 1/2 hrs away yes the rain did come from there

I think the dust got them. Quite sure in fact.

I'm assuming you're talking a pesticide, as opposed to a fertiliser. Derris dust (cauliflower) would kill fish fast.

Was that all your fish?

You can keep the plants alive with Seasol, or Earth Juice Range, or another organic fert you know is fish friendly.

That will also keep all your bacteria alive, but how to detoxify your water I don't really know.

The bacteria might be gone as well, you'll smell if the bacteria has gone the way of the fish, very similar to cow manure smell.

Steve?

F&F, your damage control proceedure sounds good.

Don't fulsh the beds with tap water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'd drain the tanks, give them a quick hose down on the inside

then drain that water.

then fill the tank to the minimum required to fill the growbeds. dec-clorinated the water and pump up to the grow beds, then do a fast drain.

re-fill tank with water, de-clorinate and re-stock.

did some reading for you.

apparently ACQ which is the more human safe replacement for CCA pine treatment is just as deadly to fish. But it sound like its not the pine as you have tin under them.

Regarding the tommy dust etc.

looked up a list of pesticides, pretty much ALL of them are ULTRA poisonus to fish. If you can give the name of the active ingredient in the dust then i can look up the LD50 for it (the amount required to kill 50% of a sample group)

If there is any good that has come out of F&F's losses its that we should all be aware of possible entry routes for "nasties" into our setups.

It would not be a stretch to picture a neighbour spraying their apple trees when there is a bit of a breeze  one AP system in tatters.

F&F, you have now become trully initiated, don't worry about les's piddly gravel washing, the REAL induction is when you have MASS KILLED fish!

No-one told Muzza that he only had to do it once..........................;)

Alll the best with your recovery process.

Spray drift is a real concern. Watch a truck boom spray on a windy day, though a wise operator would wait for a still day, if they're booked out....

Many chemicals are active well beyond the 'safe' date. A case in NZ only days ago of a dog dying from poison deemed to be inactive months beforehand.

Throw a greenhouse around things you then need ventilation. Hard to win when the neighbours use chemicals. My neighbour, wise in so many ways is still spraying his veg plot though it looks like crap. When they sprayed the whole region for tussock moth nobodies garden looked good for 5 years.

Sorry for rant, barely started and should stop now.

If it's any compensation a mate looks about to lose 1000 endangered fish because the ponds are too hot. 50 000 worth of fish and 7 years to bring the population up to that size.

Fishkeeping can be tough.
