Went and picked up the fish tonight. Silvers 100% survival rate so far. Everyone please touch wood
One dead cattie. There was no O2 in the catty bag, so I am surprised there weren't more deaths. Overall, very happy indeed with that result.

Steve I see now why you said get TT's. They are soooo cool. As soon as I put them in with the goldies, they got to work on the gravel and gunge on the plants and headed for the rocks (see pic). Their whiskers are brilliant too.

The silvers are very active. There is a huge range of sizes from 30 to 45 or so mm. They started doing laps of the tank as soon as they were put in. They also ate some barra pellets before I put them in the tank.

My BIL took some pics. Here they are.

I'm in love with these new fish. I put a cube of blood worms in witht the catties and they went spare!. Also, the silvers took about 3 seconds to get the knack of 1mm barra pellets.

Now I know that silvers food generally has 35% protein and the barra has 45%. Is there any negative effects of feedsing higher protein food?

Nice one monya, good to see some catfish pics at last. Its going to be interesting seeing how they go over time compared to other species.
I wouldnt think feeding your Perch higher protein pellets would have any adverse effects, infact it may even improve their growth rates. I actually feed my trout on Perch pelletts (with the lower than recommended proteinand cheaper price) and they seem to be doing fine. I do however supplement their diet with Tadpoles so maybe they get some extra protein from them.

I am pretty sure the main reason that silvers are fed lower protien food, is that the protien/fishmeal is one of the most expensive ingredients, and silver perch being omnivirous dont need as high protien lvls as say barra (Just means the silvers might not take in all the protien, meaning more ammonia produced than the lower protien feeds)

The fish look great by the way! Especially the TTs

Higher phosphate wastes from higher than recommended protein nutrient intake of the fish.

So, get some phosphate sucking plants and enjoy.

It will alter your bio-films make up slightly to accomodate the change. Algae will get a foothold easier so careful with light levels. You probably won't even notice except your toms will go ballistic, might even fill out your corn! :D

Your leafy veg might slow down, most interested to find out that theory.

no worries. The catties are in the inside aquarium for now, outside, we would never catch them. Just let me know when you want to pick them up.

My BIL (another one) just came and got 25 silvers. It was a 2 man job catching them LOL, one person down one end scaring them down to the person with the net. All is well that ends well.

Mon, I have made a divider to fit across the tank that is movable, frame is of 20mm conduit and covered with gutter guard (please note the intricate weave used in holding it all together  )

I just put it in one end of the tank and move it down herding the fish until the area is just large enough to get the fish net in easily
