I modified the system a bit today, moved the feed from being internal to external. I found myself doing a bit of maintenance that could have been avoided. I've upped the size of the pipe too, minimise blockages, increased flow, pump doesn't have to work as hard. I knew doing that Cert II in plumbing last year would come in handy! :P

(lol... uploading take two... Seriously guys "The image must be at least 0 pixels wide, 0 pixels high and at most 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels high. The submitted image is 432 pixels wide and 768 pixels high." Come on now! What year is this :P If falls within the image size parameters but is being rejected because it's portrait, not landscape... :naughty:)

Actually, meh, I'll use imgur :P

Pump died, lost about 10 of the trout I put in this year (the 10 biggest of course)... I have a temp pump installed at the moment I got at B for $99 just before they closed (this all happened Friday night just as I got back from a 4 day business trip). The pump that blew was a little Davey D15VA which has been fantastic! After pulling it out and checking what was wrong, is seems a stone from a nectarine had gotten into the system (from a nearby tree), and gone through the pump... It was exactly the right diameter to lodge nut and tail connected to it :(

I decided to go with a vortex pump because of it's ability to move soft solids to 20mm. My previous pump which was an Ebara Optima, could only shift 10mm solids and the inlet holes would often get blocked, which resulted in that horrible 'maintenance' stuff I hate so much! The Davey hasn't missed a beat, been fantastic, uses 100W less than the Ebara, haven't had to clean it since installation, but one rogue perfectly sized nectarine stone was enough to wreck everything!

I'm keen to get another D15VA, but I think I'll have to put a 10mm strainer on it somehow (maybe try and alter the one from the Ebara to fit). I would have liked to have seen how long it lasted before it dying of natural causes.

So lesson learned, there's no such thing as a maintenance free system... YET!

Ok, so it turns out the pump wasn't blown. Just got very hot and needed to cool down before it could be used again, it's been reinstalled (with the filter from the Ebara retrofitted on to it) and is doing fine. Davey tested it and said it's good to go, tough little thing!

The remaining Trout are going well, caught one yesterday while cleaning the system to have a quick look. I like!
