Hi Ao+
I think it is as simple as this.
A warm water system needs to be filtered at a higer speed (flowrate), if the retentiontime in the filterbed is "to long" the proscess water cools down, and then you would need to heat it up again.
cheers

Just a Question are talking about a Sand Filter..?

If so, the guys from Kiophen Steve"Birdman" have been running and playing with Sand a Gravel Filter's for over 5yeaar's..

they work Great and only take a few minutes to clean out..

A 55 Gallon system Will safely flow 2000gph thru them.. If you are using a 55Gal drum only flow 2000gph..

I have a 100lt[22-25gal] system flowing 1000lt thru it and the fish are doing fine.. Filter is 18mth old and I have to say it does need to be rebuilt soon..[I have a few faults in my design]

so if you are only using the sand to help filter out solids and have a small amount of bio in it yes they work great..

Psst I have not had any form of algae bloom or mayor pH Swings in my system due to the shell grit in the system.. You Don't need to work just sand in the filter..
