Electricians in Perth are generally busier than a one-armed-bricklayer in Baghdad... and they aren't interested in doing little jobs.

I tried to get one a couple of years back for a couple of small jobs at my shop, I contacted quite a few, most point blank said they didn't want the work because the job was too small. Those that said they would do it, quoted between 2-6 weeks wait time and $130-$140pHr.

I eventually found one that was happy to do the work and did it a fair bit cheaper than I had been quoted by others... that had obviously over-quoted (time and materials) because they didn't really need or want the job.

I think I still have his number somewhere, If I remember when I get to work tomorrow I'll try and find it... If I do I will PM it to you.

Jim's now have electrical franchisees, I saw an ad somewhere recently and they state that they do small electrical jobs.

The problem with those small jobs, as a sparky if you work on a circuit and it doesnt comply you are legally obliged to fix it. If the person refuses to let you fix it, you either notify western power who will give you 28 days to fix it, or if severe enough pull the fuses on the spot. So simply installing a GPO can turn into a big job. Then people think you are ripping them off by having to do all this other work. We went into a house to install a light and a fan and it turned into a full house rewire. It is amazing that the previous sparky who had been working on the place didnt pull the fuses. Exposed wires through out the house from the old VIR insulation falling off. The whole place was a massive fire hazard.

In NZ you are allowed to do basic electrical work yourself (well you were, not sure about now).
Good idea IMHO.
People with no idea will still get a sparky, but anyone with the desire and some common sense just learns the basics and does it.

Is it not legal to DIY electrical work there in AU? The bit about stuff not up to code then being legally bound to fix it kinda sucks. Around here if something is dangerous you tag it out and leave but the customer just cuts the tags off and turns it on again most of the time. Code here for stuff is pretty strict otherwise like all wire in pipe and gfi circuits used in any area near sinks. No al wire is permitted as well but there is a ton still hanging from pole to meter drops all over. The code enforcement has made us pull al wire out of units before and replace it with copper if its installed on a residential building.

I do most everything myself. Electric, plumbing, general handy stuff, except gas i dont know anything about it so I dont touch it.
Im pretty sure insurance will not pay if any unlicenced work is carried out on your property regardless if it has anything to do with your claim... Easy fix, deny everything.

These days for every piece of electrical work you get done you are supposed to get a certificate from the sparky. I dont know what their response will be without a certificate.

It kinda sux how insurance companies refuse to use any pragmatism whatoever when it comes to claims. Even if you totally wired it correctly and to standards, but some totally seperate issue caused you to make a claim, they will just flat our deny the claim. Its BS.
I guess its up to you to find a company that is more suitable, if enough people wanted it then some insurance company would meet that need (supply and demand) I guess most people don't do things themselves ;)
