Many of you may not know but before any live fish can be moved onto your property you must first obtain translocation approval from the Dept of Fisheries. To date this has rarely been done as most people buying fish for aquaponics were unaware they needed approval and those selling the fish haven't bothered checking if approval had been granted. The onus is on the purchaser of the fish to obtain approval and they are the ones who would be committing an offence and liable to a penalty.
To get approval you just need to fill out the form and send/email it to fisheries. You can find the form here:

Its free to do and once you have done it once it can be renewed the following year rather than having to do it all again.

I have recently been informed that I should be insisting that people I sell fish to first have Translocation Approval. For some reason they seem to be focusing on Trout at this stage. I know that both the Govt Trout hatchery and the private one in Pemberton have also been told they need to sight Translocation Approvals before selling fish.

I'm not sure why this has suddenly become an issue but I have a feeling its got something to do with the new Translocation Policy that is currently being worked on. My thoughts are that if everyone suddenly starts sending in a form to Fisheries they will soon realise that its basically a waste of everyones time and perhaps change the regulations in regards to aquaponics.

My advice is to get your forms in asap if you want trout this year as approval will probably take at least 4 weeks to be granted.

And once again, reading through that it would appear that every person buying any fish from anywhere and taking it home must apply for a translocation permit before hand, are they clamping down on all the aquarium stores and pet stores? I bet not that's too big and out of hand for them to do anything about..

Indeed EB. There are also the online stores that have no mention or requirement to have the approval.

question B3- name of supplier'. , your name or trading name?
B 4- liscence held by supplier . , is this a number or discription?
D.6 Has the stock been genetically altered in anyway? (e.g. triploidy)
D.7 If applicable, will the fish have specified pathogen-free certification prior to
the translocation

yea just been through it myself...

could be possible my fish supplier doesnt have translocation approval so some of these questions may prove difficult.

Im not one to break the law or do wrong by the fish industry so personally I feel a little discomfort right now to be honest. Need to get this done.

I am keen on getting some trout from you for this winter , I have had a go at filling out the translocation form and in addition to Matthew's questions can you let me know on the following -

B2 - supplier address ?
F1 - scientific name ? Oncorhynchus mykiss - Is this correct for your rainbow trout ?
F3 - taxonomic reference ?
G1 details of species in natural environs in WA ?
H4 - methods used to package & transport fish ?
