Re sunlight:

Most of us think vegies need full sunlight all day to grow properly as we still garden in the tradition of our northern hemisphere ancestors, and this is what many gardening books tell us. In the southern hemisphere however plants will spend energy trying to repell UV rays during the day. Permaculture teaches the following adage - 'Don't be afraid of the shade". Your vegies will do well with about 4 hours of sunlight a day. Make sure your tank isn't in full sun as this will promote green algae and greater evaporation. If your plants ARE in the sun all day dont fret and try to cover them up - but look out for sunburn, some shade is fine, all thanks to the ozone layer hole. The best possie for plants in the southern hemisphere is a northerly aspect - facing towards the north ( depending on your unique landscape factors such as walls or tree brakes etc) . Dont have them facing to the west as the summer sun may just be too strong - especially with the record temps you guys are facing at the moment.

On the topic of blue barrels, I can get them from a place called LandMark for $30. I went into a horse goods retailer and asked about 'em because apparently they're used for feed. They directed me to this place.

Is $30 too much? You guys are saying $10 MAX....

Blue barrels, 200l (Tilkey) plastic closed top with bungs, may have gone up on recent rise but would be <$35

We got 2nd hand ones for $15 but my old man got charged $60! the bloke selling the $15 was that impressed by the response from people who wanted them, that he immediatley put the price up! Luckily Jaymie got in early and ordered a heap of them.

supply and demand, nice profit margin for the seller, not so good for people wanting to build cheap systems tho
