Do you know why it doesnt work?

Pressure - about 10m height difference is the limit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siphon has a good description in the last paragraph of the "Theory" section.

Basically the low pressure at the top of the tube makes the dissolved gas come out of solution/water boil and the gas breaks the siphon.

yep the pressure gets so low the water boils at room temp. The dissolved gases come out as well. Kinda neat. I think 28 feet is where it happens. I did a test with my dad once when I was 9 or ten as he was explaining vacuum pumps and how they work to remove moisture once. He hung a hose off the roof and pulled up water and it got to about 28 feet IIRC and that is where it stayed at a low micron reading. You could see it bubble too.

Cool thanks people.

You see the same thing with a syringe if you draw up water really fast, and in cavitation around propellers. Lot's of air, then it collapses back into the water.

Cool dad

from that article...

"A set of experiments was recently published, seriously questioning Hughes's hypothesis"

I wrote to him about his statements when he was in the media a few months back, and got a serious feeling he didnt know what he was talking about. I think he based his argument on the difference between the articles in the complete version vrs the abridged version of the dictionary, rather than any understanding of siphons. I questioned some of what he had to say and he talked about the soda siphon (which I think is a pressure pump not a siphon) on his desk as evidence for his case.

We didn't get along :)
