Can I charge 2 by 12 volt batteries with a 24 volt supply, then connect something that needs a 12 volt supply or the other way around?

ie charge in series and draw in parallel or the other way around?

I wish some of this stuff made sense. I was hoping I'd have learnt something by now, but I still look at my demand feeder project and it doesn't mean anything to me.

Charge in parallel, draw in series, I don't think is possible at least not easily.
You'd have to manually connect the batteries differently when charging/discharging.

You can charge the two on 24 and take 12 off one for a while but you will stuff the battery up that you are taking the 12 off.We used to do this with the truck running the radio off one 12 but we were always in trouble with that battery .we had to get a converter to bring it back to 12 .That used to draw about 3 amps so you have to have it so it is off when the key is off otherwise you will always have a flat battery.

Hmmm. Is there ay issue with batteries being pulsed rather than having a constant supply. Im thinking of switched charge at 12 volts draw at 24 with caps to charge/supply when the other is happening.

I've been thinking of making an anything in, anything out system so I can stick whatever generating thing I make onto my system. SO I want a stack of different things at different voltages charging the same bank of batteries as I use to supply a 24 volt thinggy, a 12 volt thinggy, and a few 6 volt thinggys.

I dont know what the thinggys are, but I'm just trying to figure out the viability of creating storage for whatever I can create, and supply for whatever wacky things I connect.

You do have to be a little careful charging more than one battery.
You wouldn't want to connect a fully discharged battery with a fully charged battery for example.....

I get what you are trying to do, but it won't be easy, battery management is as best not simple at worst dangerous.

How does a grid connected solar system on a house take what is no doubt fluctuating numbers of electrons, and make them fit nicely into the toaster next door?

A clever grid connect controller.
In short, I don't know exactly how they work and I wouldn't want to try to make one

I think what I want is some batteries, and some devices connected to some terminals marked 24 volts, 12 volts, and 6 volts.

Using my sophisticated wiring diagram, is there some arrangement that will give me that? The 6 volts is optional, because all I would want that for is for a 5 volt power regulator to run PICAXE stuff, but I can dump more power if needs be.

I suggest you make your self a switched mode power supply. You can choose a wide voltage input and even an adjustable output. That way you have anything in and either set voltage out or adjustable out. Does that sound perfect or what ?

What you need are 24 - X dc-dc convertors.

Make your wind supply 24v they are readily available. Or if you must have it 12v and add a buck/boost convertor to bring it up to the 24v of the battery bank.

I am assuming you have already brought the solar panel and can't just buy a 12v one.
