Whoo Hoo. . . . .
I might have to go see the cod, I have a tank just suited for one or two of the lazy old buggers, then I can set about reducing the population of mozzie fish in the local ponds!

Did you end up getting some, A.J ? Would like to know how you got on if you did.
Cheers

Bloody hell, getting very sick of not being able to get hold of fingerlings. At an economically viable price of course.

Weather events last summer.. meant that virtually no stock was over-wintered... and what was available was priced accordingly...

October was unseasonally warm... and the early, and subsequent spawns have all been really good... as Troutman pointed out....

But November & December have been unseasonally cold... and the fry just haven't grown.... until now...

Murray Cod, Silver Perch and Jade Perch... are only just coming on market even here on the Eastern seaboard... when normally they would be available early December....

The good news is... the spawns have been good... and it's very likely that the hatcheries will get another two spawns this summer...

So there should be lots of fingerlings available... unfortunately, too late for many.... but at least therre will be plenty over-wintered this year... and priced accordingly (around late Feb)...

Given your winter temps OBO... and tank capacity... perhaps you could over-winter 10,000... and supply us all early next summer....

I'll take 1000 off you mid October... @ $0.50...

They breed readily, and they grow all over the place in W.A. except for where they have been pushed out by gambusia and other non native.. Don;t know how they would go running a system though... :dontknow:

With the extremes in temperatures Perth has (similar to Adelaide), and the retail costs of tiny fish, I can't understand why people just don't go out and catch a few wild goldfish.
Take the family, or a mate, for a fun day out.
They crap real good, are tough as, and you can keep them all year without adding energy costs. :)
I have heard that a cork float and a bit of cheese on hook works well. Make sure you debarb the hook.
Your not sure were to find them? Check out the fishing forums. They can be very helpful.

Any wild koi around Perth? Would love to keep koi but not allowed in SA.

Walking the dogs in Thornlie, WA I have seen a couple of Koi well over half a meter long and schools of 20cm long ones in drainage ponds. There are quite a number! No idea how to catch them though...
