all the dead fish I've ever seen seem to have their mouths open. For some of them it seems to have come as a surprise.
But still not a good thing to have in your system. My sympathies for your losses, may they stop NOW

Karel, I think the "open" mouth look is indicative of the fishs last thoughts...

"oh poop"

Jaymie,

Aeration has been always on from day 1. Just cranked it up to max capacity now to get more bubbles through.

The dead jades had their mouths open. Do other peoples dead fish always have their mouths wide open? Is this how all dead fish look?

Karel
Hello Roskar;
I do not what your system looks like (filters/beds/etc.) but why are you not running your pump 24/7 until your system re-establishes an aerobic set of bacteria again. The stink you had probably means anaerobic took over your system. Did you clear the sludge from each element of your system when you did the water exchange? You need pH, ammonia/nitrite testing to understand where you are.
Good luck.

Roskar, sorry for your losses, unfortunately I can only offer sympathy as I know little of the causes

I have been battling to keep temp gains over night. I can get the temp to rise by 4 or 5 degs by pumping thru my black pipe during the day, but I lose say 3 of those degs overnight. Then if I have a couple of cloudy or cold days......
So I have changed from on all the time to having it turned off during the coldest hours of the night. I know that is also the period of lowest DO, but the fish don't seem to mind ATM, although I will be adding aeration as they get bigger.

The Nights here have been really quite cold, in the low to mid teens, and so far, this change has been good. I am now only losing around1 - 1.5 degs per night.

All up, the system misses 3 cycles. the 4 am, the 5:30 and the 7am.

I'm running my square metre grow bed at 15 minutes on/30 minutes off intervals now.....from 6.00am to 6.00pm. From 6.00pm to 6.00am, I run 15 minutes on and 2hours off.

We've got lots of air in the tank and my bio-filters run continuously (on another pump).

Gary, what kind of timer are you using for flood/drain?

Doug,

We use a brand called Arlec. The store where I bought them (our largest hardware chain) had them on a special (two for $9.95). They can be set in 15 minute on/off increments.

HPM also have the timers available with the 15min intervals
