Fantastic site!
I'm new to the aquaponics thing, but completely hooked! I have already connected up our fish pond, (which has been completely self sufficient for 2 years, no pumps etc.) and it's working brilliantly.

I am basically a lazy farmer :shifty:

I love to grow food but am soooo tired of weeds, grass, ring-in seeds from chook grain etc, that when I saw a you tube vid about an AP system in America, I was hooked.

I have just obtained in the last week...
3 (glass) fish tanks for redclaw
4 1000lt farm (cube) type spray containers (=3 tanks + 5 gravel beds)
and 2 44gal blue poly tanks (for the redclaw gravel beds)
to get set up 6 person family style.

I even accidentally managed to rope someone else into the fever because I went snooping the farms to see if someone wanted to sell the cube tubs, leaving notes in letter boxes
Now, this new friend of mine is just as keen to start up one on his property.

Stupidly excited!
and thanks for having me!

welcome inboard! just be careful cleaning out the tanks, it can be hard to get reliable information on what was in them. Mine was supposed to be a harmless detergent but it killed the grass where i washed it out within a week and it took a couple of months to start growing back...

Welcome to the forum Amanda, you might not know it yet but you are probably hooked and it is too late to turn back. You are amongst friends, so feel free to share your photos so we can see how things are shaping up.I knew someone from Bowen once, on a trip through Europe Xmas 1985.

Mine were filled w/ olive oil and it killed the grass where I washed them... and the fish that now live in them are fine. I think too much of anything (including olive oil) will kill plants (including grass).

Too true. The 44gal poly's have had acid in them so they'll need a big flush before cutting and further cleaning, the cubes had coolant in them, so same thing really. But as far as concern for the grass...it is inspiration to move on to aquaponics :thumbright:

Our little group is working at setting up a community garden in the town somewhere, it's pretty exciting because it means we can bring together all forms of growing.
So any tips, hints are always welcome. This site has heaps of great info, so I'm really glad for the referral from my friend too
