Duinui - Skip the following question - I found the answer in one of your previous post on the other thread. "The drain outlet on the wall of the previous tank, near the bottom of the tank - Does it also require a guard and if so please explain what it should look like?"

I will also drill a small hole near the bottom of the standpipe for drainage in the event of power failure. What size hole should I drill in the standpipe??

If you follow that plan, how will drilling a hole in the bottom of the stand pipe allow it to drain in a power failure?

And I agree with Ao, painting the outside of the tank is pointless.

Hi Guy's

I use to make holes like Duinui suggested but my BIL had my drill so I tried it the way AO+ suggested. One small iron/steel hatchet and a few minutes time and all holes completed. All are a perfect fit too except for needing a small amount of cement around each pipe. LOL. No more drills for me.

AO+, Duinui

I have a question about quality of materials here in Thailand. In the USA many stores sell seconds. Do they do the same thing here in Thailand. I ask because many times I buy ball valves that become very hard to open and close after a short time of use. I have some now that without pliers you cannot open or close them. A real pain in the A<<<. I think DO Home is maybe the king of seconds. What about quality from Home Pro - I know their price is the highest. Johnra

Quality Control - is a phrase as yet unlearned here.
Worse (probably) than China.

I don't know how you do in USA.
But in thainlad they will sell same thing different price, same ball valve in True Value or Home Pro will be more expensive than in Global house.
Each store will target it's customer and price product differently.

If you want to know quality you have to buy, use and remember (for not so expensive things)
For something higher price you may need to search from internet.

I noticed someone mentioned using canna lilies in the system...do lilies generally do well in an aquaponic enviroment? Particularly the stargazer?

I don't know about stargazer. However, canna lilies and any other water plant that likes wet feet will grown in gravel with the roots underwater all of the time. I have two gravel bog gardens that I use to filter my Koi pond and every water loving plant including cannas are growing great. Try to google information on natural ponds and bog gardens - most of them have list of plants that do well in different areas. I sure learned a lot about water plants when I started learning about bog gardens using google.

Guys,

I'm just about to do an IBC setup in Chonburi, Thailand and I've been looking around for all the bits and pieces I need.

I've got pretty much everything execpt a decent supply of Hydroton/Hydroleca, can somebody point me in the right direction for a supplier? Chonburi based would be perfect but Bangkok based is expected...

Many thanks in advance,

Tom.

:)

I'll try and get some details for you Tom...

The manufacturer of Hydroton has ceased production.... and the first container of a replacement clay product arrived in Sydney a few days ago... reportedly pretty good... and made in Thailand...

Wow - I didn't know that!

Back in the UK we always sell YongKind from Holland as they much more PH stable and meet the RHP standard, but I have seen Hydroton here before so figured that would be the easiest to get...

So here is the hydro shop owner making posts about where to buy a product that is not even being made anymore...!!!
