What do people think about feeding a crayfish leftover meat from the table? Granted they probably shouldn't highly salted or deep fried. I would imagine they would like it, but I hear people say not to compost meat because of bacteria. Is there some bad bacteria that might grow on the meat that wouldn't grow on fish poop or fish food or rotting plant roots that might pose a health risk? Could I just throw a chicken carcass in there?

I only know that Aussie Yabbies are primarily vegetarian, though they will scavenge. They're also very clean, and will eat gross stuff to stop it polluting their water, that is if they can't drag it off to a neighbour's territory.

The polluting here would just be the meat breaking down just the same way that fish poo would break down, right? Harmful if it's too close to fish, but if some water gets on a strawberry it's not going to give someone food poisening. I've read in a few places that crayfish are omniverous. I'd be getting a species native to California in the US.

Yeah omnivorous definitely. It's just ours significantly prefer vegetable matter. so I was thinking that it might not be such a good idea. I think perhaps my message was too subtle.

Yabbies absolutely love eating worms and snails too (not sure if they come into a meat group?)

Compost them with worms or black soldier flys and keep the meat out of your tanks.

Good reasons not to put meat in your tank water?
Depending on the age of the crayfish, they prefer broken down plant matter. So not the best choice of feed for crayfish, however they love fresh fish as a treat now and then.

I love to eat crawfish meats, But only eat fresh, As you said it ll be harmful just because of bacteria well then its true....

They were talking about feeding crayfish cooked meat, not eating off crayfish themselves.
