I take it they tell how long the thing will run with a given load.

They tell you how many electrons they managed to stuff into the box ;)

So can you relate it to my 200 amp hour battery?

I wish they would just say that. Here lies 10 to the power of 282374283482374874587458349 electrons

It would be so much easier.

Does anyone actually know what those numbers mean.

I dont really understand anything other than watts and even then only to say this 8 watt thing uses less than this 16 watt thing.

So I cant answer the question " How long can 50% of a 200 amp hour battery run a 240volt 8 watt pump for?"

Can any anyone else?

And then can you tell me how my system relates to, say Jaymie's APC 650?

And then can you start a new thread and explain it all to everyone else :)

please

I'll be your best friend

In fact I can promise that almost everyone will be your best friend.

That's a difficult deal to pass up.

Watch a little more TV / be almost everyone's best friend.

Eh?

Eh?

It depends how you discharge it, your battery should have an amp/hour rating and an hour rating let's say it's 200Ah at 10 hours.
That means you have 200Ah for the 10 hour period.
Means you can draw 20 amps for 10 hours.
If you do it in 1 hour you can expect 50-60% of the 200Ah
If you do it in 30 minutes you can expect 35-50% of the 200Ah.

This is all from memory, so may not be spot on, but it's probably close :)

In theory...
You can probably discharge your battery to 80 or even 90%, let's say 80%
So at 50% capacity, you have 30% left until you get in the grey area.
200x12x30%
720 Watts.
Let's assume your inverter is 80% efficient
720x80%
576 Watts
Pump is 8 Watts

Gives you 72 hours.

No guarantees expressed or implied :)

Don't know that model, but a quick Google says that's a 650VA 230V 400W model.
I'm assuming Oz is 230VAC?
The 650VA gives the current limit (650/230) - The 400 Watts gives the capacity, not sure if it means capacity of the battery, or the capacity of the output (after losses)

oz is 240v ac

Hmmm...

Regardless of what that number is, it seems to lack a dimension.

Man, I wish I understood this stuff.

If it was 400W at the output, i.e. after inverter losses etc. etc. it would mean you could run your 8W pump for 50 hours.

I knew I had seen APC UPS's somewhere, I just looked down at the floor and I have a ES-500 :)

I just spent some more time on the APC website.
A 420W device such as the BE700Y-IN will last for 1 hour and 18 minutes while drawing 50W, so the 420W seems to mean nothing at all.
I wish I hadn't drunk so much beer tonight, I've got myself questioning myself now ;)

UPS seem expensive for what they are. A deep cycle battery a smart charger, and a small inverter cost about the same, but get you a lot of backup.

How much do these things cost second hand? The new ones I've seen cost $500 or so. Mine cost 300$ for 200 amp hours (so I guess 100 amphours at 50% discharge) all brand new, with a 7 stage 8 amp smart charger. And all bought retail rather than on ebay.

I know how much MY ups cost second hand... nothing! I was there when it was about to get thrown out as excess equipment
