How about swapping the FT and the ST so you are pumping from the sump, draining the GBs into the FT which overflows back into the ST so your FT is always full? Could that give you the scope to run a few marron or another fish species in the ST?

If I swap the FT with the ST it would mean putting the FT out in the sun which I am not keen on doing. In it's current location the FT will be under the existing patio so saving a heap of dosh in providing shade for it.
Thanks for the comments, keep them coming. :)

You can do away with the sump if you run Constantly Flooded. The water level in the fish tank will remain unchanged if you do this. That's what some of the others are trying to say. You could always use the sump as an extra fish tank if you want.

For CF your fish tank would need to be able to handle what's still in the pipes and a slight overflow from the beds if the pump were to shut down. Not a problem with short pipe runs.

I'm just on a simplification drive... Can't see the sense in adding in a sump tank when it really isn't needed.....

Yeah. I guess the argument of lower electrical running cost in timed f&d (depending on pump) are offset buy the cost of the sump tank. Unless u got them free like me :). But then could argue that I would have more FT or GB by converting sump.....I'm sold!

I bought the last Trial System from BYAP today, very happy to have it and will collect it next week when it is ready. Have to get to now and prep a place to put it. I'll convert it into a flood and drain system. Might run some Silver Perch in it as I like them, and I can have fish at various stages of growth with out having to worry about them eating each other.

if the patio is that high.. I personally would Ditch the Sump all together..

Drop the Grow-bed so it sits just a bit high off the patio surface and/or do..

Larger Tank[Water tank..] or if going IBC just have the water drop into the IBC.
The lower the height of the Tank lvl to the Growbed height means more water flow and the lower the power Pump you can use..
