Thanks Luke, yeah that makes sense I have read some people having issues with root rot but I guess it's just a matter of getting everything going and then adjust if needed.

Thanks Ron,

What I meant with the no screw cap problem was that I was planning on using the top third as a GB but I haven't seen a gb drain that uses that whole cap space without the lid, they all seem to cut a hole in the cap itself and run the pipe through it?

Yep I got that PDF which is great and now I think my plan is to,
2/3 fist tank
1/3 sump with pump in bottom
Pump waterr from sump to FT and then overflow runs via PVC back down to the gb's and drains back into sump and that cycle just keeps going.

The main thing that's got me now is, if I am filling the ft from the sump and then it overflows down to the grow beds how do I get the solids/crap from the bottom of the FT?

Thanks again Linc

My IBC had a plain blank screw cap as well
This is what I did.
OH, make sure when you screw the cap on before you fill with gravel, screw it on as TIGHT AS YOU CAN. Otherwise it might leak !
I had to use a "F" clamp to lock onto the cap ridges and lever off the PVC fitting as a makeshift wrench to get extra leverage.
Make a hole with a holesaw.

That's great superveg, I have already got my existing two beds sorted but I have a third that will be added later, your solution here will work great for that one.

Like this :)
The PVC fitting groaned a little but it was already on pretty tight and didn't leak.
I filled the GB to the top with water and neither the cap or the fitting leak at all.
Didn't use any glue/silicone etc.

Hey Jaymie,

I did i just went for 10mm river pebble, i got a tonne for $50 which was reasonable. I have started cycling my system as of yesterday just with some bunnings seedings and the daily dose of Seasol. I dont have a test kit yet so i have no idea what the water is doing just yet.

What do you think about fish to start with once my water is ready, i was leaning towards Jade Perch but for no real reason other than seeing you have them successfully up here. Can you recommend someone to buy some fingerlings from as well?

I will get a few photo's up this arvo so you can see the progress.

Cheers Linc

Just a quick photo update, this is day 3 of cycling, just a few leafy green seedlings in at the moment.

I still need to get some cover over my sumps, get some bamboo wrapping around the whole thing. Not sure what my water is like yet as i still havent got a test kit and will get an air stone to throw in the fish tank when its ready to go.

There is like a film of dirt on the bottom of the FT, should i just scrub that and get it flowing through the system and hopefully it will clean up?

Anyway for my first attempt im pretty stoked :headbang:

Dirty water:
I guess its only been a few days.
Compared to an aquarium, the gravel beds don't really filter out the fines, so you could add some filter material for a little while and that is guaranteed to clear the water up.
Could also try adding an egg ?
If you add the filter material then scrub the bottom of the FT with a broom the filter will pick up all the dirt.

Thanks super, how exactly would you add the filter material? Just underneath the outlet on the gb?

Also how is the egg used?

Thanks Linc

With the egg - just use say 3 x egg whites (no yolk). Tip it in the water and let its do its stuff. It holds dirt in suspension and in a couple of days, you can scoop it out

I do add filter material under the outlet for the GB - works very well. I have used a small pot plant container full of it and that works well

The water coming up from the sump is very clean,in the tank I think it's left over stuff from when I first added the media, I think the color in the tank is actually more contributed from the crap sitting on the bottom.

Frustrating cause I spent three hours washing the stone

no worries

The egg works really well, surprised me as well first time. Filter wool under the outlets on the GB will def help to

Have fun :)
