Was recently showing my small AP system to some friends from overseas. She is Canadian and he is French. He has been involved in the agricultural industry fro some years and was telling me that chook poo is used as fish food in Tunisia (a former French colony). Did some research on the net and came up with a paper that talks about higher yields for fish in integrated chook and aquaculture systems. Have almost finished the chook pen but am a bit of a way off integrating the two. Will probably just collect the poo and see how the barra take to it first.

A lot of the use of chickens over fish ponds... isn't so much to directly feed the fish...

But to fertilise the pond...and encourage algae and micro-organism development.... which helps with nutrient and oxygen management... and feeds the fish...

The danger is such integration... is chickens, as for all warm blooded animals... can carry and distribute e-coli... and salmonella...

Of course, they didn't account for other factors, like disease. Just adding some info that I thought people might find useful.

This is basically greenwater aquaculture.

Here in PH (and in most Asian tilapia-growing areas) chicken and pig poo are commonly used for "extensive" tilapia cultures (outdoors, low tech, minimal human intervention and as opposed to "intensive cultures"), and are introduced to newly-prepared fishponds as fertilizer for green algae. Existing ponds can also be fertilized to encourage/maintain algae growth.

This works with tilapia as they are primarily vegetarians and can filter green algae suspended in the water.
