Thanks for the advice troutman .... Given that my dam is only about 2m deep I think trout will be a no go for me.

Seems that Silver Perch are going to be the only viable option.

Now back to the topic at hand ... finding the little suckers at a resonable price.

I still haven't found the name of the fella that stocks them here in my own suburb ... looks like I will have to go and talk to my neighbours, god forbid.

we are looking after a property in gidgegannup at the moment that has two large dams full of silvers that are breeding freely so it is posible up were we are.The key in this situation is when the dams get low we top them up from another larger dam the dams were stocked 8 years ago so it may take some time before the breeding commences.
if you contact me at gidgie nursery we can get some silvers in for you for $1.20 ea

Nah .. I don't want to breed overgrown tadpoles with beards :-)
I am sticking with the silver perch I think.

I haven't got my system up and running just yet but hopefully will soon and will be looking for around 500 each of brown and rainbow trout from about the end of March and 750 barra's by the start of September.

I live in Esperance W.A. where the water temp would get to high for trout during summer and too cold for the barra's during winter.

G'day Lefty, Good to see you here... Man thats a lot of fish, you must be planning a pretty big system.

From what I have heard recently the only place to get trout in W.A. is from Pemberton trout hatchery. Barra are a little easier to get hold of with a few different places having them available.

Have you thought about starting with some silver perch to begin with? They grow all year round in your climate, and it would give you a chance to get used to your system, and iron out any problems you may have. Keeping a cycle of trout for 6 months then barra for 6 months isn't an easy thing to do with a new system..

Would love to hear a little more about the system your proposing too... :)

Speaking of Silver perch guys, is there a restriction to buy them unless you have a aquaculture licence. I tried to buy some from my local fish shop and they said I needed to have one. How do you get on from the hatcheries, or from interstate?
