Checked the ibc system this morning to find the 10 jades belly up or swimming upside down
Got them all out into a 70L bucket salted and two air stones and will see later if any have recovered.
4 goldfish in the same tank were fine and very hard to net but got them into the fish pond
Now draining the whole system to do a full water change
Only thing I can put it down to is I sprayed with roundup 10 days ago around the backyard and went close to the sump tank at one stage not thinking straight.
Ammonia and nitrite tested 0

Jeez I am doing everything wrong with this system. Killed all the fish with town water when I left the hose in over night, now have poisoned them I think
:upset:

Was there heaps of air in the IBC system? I use Roundup in the backyard as well on a still day and if it happened 10 days later, I don't think it is the roundup. I could be wrong but.

There are two 100mm air stones in there and the sump return and 3 gb returns to the sump. So when its running lots of air I guess, but have been turning the pump off at night the last two nights to keep temps up a bit.
The fish were not gulping at the surface but swimming upside down/sideways around the tank
Goldies and yabbies fine so far

:dontknow:

Well it must have been a lack of DO issue like Ivan said. Got home just before and 5 of them have righted themselves so I put them in the greenhouse system with the other jades. 4 dead and one still trying so left him in the bucket with the air stone
Looks like a rethink of the ibc system is needed as I was going to put trout in it next year.

Glad that you managed to rescue some. Just remember that the warmer the water, the less dissolved oxygen there is. What works in winter may not work in summer.

Yes , I should not have turned off the pump at night. Thinking about it , it is a dumb thing to do in a system with a sump. Turn off pump, then beds empty into sump and sump sits there losing oxygen all night. Pump turns on in the morning and pumps low oxygen water to the fish tank and the oxygenated water in the fish tank from the air stones gets sucked out to the growbeds, and fish suffer.
Will not be doing this ever again, and will only have fish that can handle whatever temps we have in future
