Hmm, and a small raw quiche, or savoury tart sort of thing...

Only nuts/vegetables/herbs/spices etc. Herb/nut crust, veggie filling with cheesy nut sauce, all dehydrated.. Contains a couple of more unusual things, white miso and nutritional yeast as some ingredients.

that does look awesome...what's the base made from??

Yes I agree, the pizza looks great.

I would really like to know what the base is made of?

I tend to eat a lot of raw food as I walk around my garden grazing, but do you cook
anything at all?

I hadn't heard of the raw food movement as I believe everything in moderation is good.

But did some research:

Quote:

Studies done on raw foodists show that they are generally undernourished. They have reduced bone mass (with bad implications for osteoporosis later in life), and reduced levels of good chemicals, such as vitamin B12, iron and vitamin D. And even though they eat more carotenoids (from yellow fruit and veges) than the rest of us, they have lower levels of vitamin A, because they seem to be poor converters of carotenoids to vitamin A.

But when you look at the nutritional science of it all, you get a different story. In fact, heating foods normally makes their nutrients more easily digestible. It does this in several ways. These include: breaking down the physical barriers in the food, for example, husk and thick skin; bursting open the cells so that the contents are more available; modifying the molecules; breaking down large indigestible molecules into smaller digestible molecules; and finally, breaking down toxins or chemicals in the food.

Quote:
The raw foodists claim that eating raw food has long been the "natural" way for us to eat our food. But we have archaeological evidence of humans cooking food some 700,000 years ago.

These quotes are from an article written by Dr Karl S. Kruszelnicki.

link http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/ ... 230592.htm

The article is more about the pure raw foodists that are also vegans and their diet
is always problematic.

But, I think the unrecognised problem is the added salt content of so many foods.
The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommends maximum of 5 g/day (about 1 tsp)
for an adult.

I've been looking at labels more closely now and to stay under 5g salt or 2g sodium
is difficult if you use any prepared items.

A high salt intake contributes to high blood pressure (BP), which is one of the most powerful predictors of stroke and major cardiovascular events including heart attack and heart failure. Other harmful effects of too much salt are that it increases the risk of kidney disease, kidney stones, osteoporosis and possibly even stomach cancer.

cheers Lou

Unfortunately in all areas of human diet there are extremists, but you can't just pick one section of a particular group and judge by that. I would be like picking those that binge regularly on junk food who are very obese and using them as a example of why western diet is bad.. Hmmm, but then I guess really western diet the way most people are eating, IS bad.

A few facts on obesity in Australia from Monash university, and I imagine that the US and many other countries would be similar.

Quote:
If weight gain continues at current levels, by 2020, 80% of all Australian adults and a third of all children will be overweight or obese.

Obesity has overtaken smoking as the leading cause of premature death and illness in Australia.

Obesity has become the single biggest threat to public health in Australia.

If everyone adopted a raw food diet, or at least a high percentage of raw food in their diet these problems would be reduced considerably. Also this would probably reduce enormously the reliance on insulin and medications required by people with diabetes high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Many people have found that type 2 diabetics can be reversed by adopting a vegan diet.

Quote:
Neal Barnard, MD, is an adjunct associate professor of medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine and author of several books, including Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes (Rodale, 2007), which presents a low-fat, vegan diet as a unique and groundbreaking solution to the problem of diabetes.

I can't see any headlines in the paper saying "People showing reduced levels of B12". Which is worse, vegans with lower levels of B12 and vitamin D? Or obesity with the range of acute illnesses that go along with it?

Also it appears that Karl may be wrong.

Quote:
It has been suggested that eating only plant-derived foods that have not been cooked or processed might make bones thinner and prone to fractures.

But a study in Archives of Internal Medicine found although bones were lighter on this diet, turnover rates were normal with no osteoporosis.

The lower bone mass is down to raw food eaters being slim, believe the authors.
So low bone mass may not actually be an issue, which i guess makes sense, light people don't need a heavy bone mass.

Personally I'm aiming to to have about 80% raw diet in the long term. I'm not vego or vegan but don't eat a lot of meat, went out a couple of days ago and had a surf and turf, but I haven't cooked anything at home in probably a month..

The pizza base is a mix of celery, tomato, carrot, sun dried tomato, ground flax seed, olive oil and herbs, dehydrated to form a consistency a bit like a pizza crust. Well ok, nothing really like a pizza crust in reality.

From those stats you could predict that in 2020 20% of Australians are under weight compared to the normal 80%.

Avocado takes about 12-15 years to grow to maturity before it begins to fruit unfortunately. By then its a mammoth tree.

Yes guacamole with dehydrated corn chips (in the background), carrot and beetroot salad and sort of mini pizzas made with dehydrated zucchini/quinoa crackers, nut cheese and veggies/herbs/olives... All raw, except I toasted the cumin seeds in the beetroot salad..

Made a raw pizza for lunch yesterday, all healthy stuff.. Actually made one for "cards night" the night before and the boys all ate it even though it was "hippy food" and not normal pizza.

Eating leftovers today..
