What is the Thai name for the Moringa Tree? Picked this name up from reading BYAP thread about how to make your own fish food. Supposedly has many other health uses.

Only 4 dead today. Almost all are the smallest ones from the last stocking. I am starting to think that they were not too healthy to start with. They all prefer the algae from the side of the pool to the floating feed. When I throw in the feed they go crazy for a few minutes then back to the side of the tank.

Ma Rum (sorry I don't know the Thai spelling off hand)
Pronounced like a mix between rum and room, ruhm perhaps.

In my experience, fish don't feed well after moving/relocating, they will probably perk up a bit in a few days.
Also as Ao pointed out, the temps are dropping in TL right now, not the best time to be rearing Tilapia.
I've been toying with the idea of incorporating a solar heater in the sump tank to try to bring the average daily temp up.

Also there is a Thai superstition that if you grow this (Moringa) in your garden, it will cause arguments in your household, beware, lol.

If the pond water warms up during the day in an inground pool how would a good cover do at night to hold in some of the heat?

Wife said she would show me one in a.m. I think this is the same tree that is called malungay in the Philippines.

So if I plant a tree like that her and I will fight - LOL. Like some of the crazy superstitions they have in the Philippines - I wanted to move to the next town just down the highway when I lived in Cebu - but no way - GF say maybe they have witches there. Could only live in the town where you were. But the classic is the reason no Filipino woman ever leaves her laundry on the line overnight, even if still damp - the witches might sniff your panties. And, I understand Thailand is even worse with this superstition stuff. . . . . .I need to go to bed . . . . .

There is a reasonable pic (Ma Rum) on page 8 of my thread.
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=8339&start=105

3rd picture down.

Issan (NE Thai) people are probably the most superstitious people I have ever come across.
Actually to the point it scared me, I have many stories about that, but an AP forum is probably not the place!

The one on the far right.
BTW, Moringa absolutely HATE being moved/transplanted, the first week or so you will think it's gonna die, hang in there, it probably won't, it'll lose most of its leaves and turn yellow.
It will be fine.

Got cold last night with high winds in Korat. I had 17 fish die since last night. Since I stocked the last of the fish, 320 fingerlings on 7 Dec These fingerlings were small - only about XXXXXXXX long. The first 80 I had stocked on 22 Nov where more mature, about XXXXXXXXXXXXXX long or longer. So far out of 400 stocked fish I have lost 61. 53 of the deaths have been since the last stocking and only 1 of the 53 was from the original stocking. So out of the last 320 stocked I have lost 52 fish. about 16 percent. I think they were not as healthy as the first batch plus the weather, especially last night could have caused some deaths.

My pond is an inground pond with a water depth of one meter. Does the temp of the water change much below the surface? Would covering the pond at night with a large plastic cover retain some of the heat built up from the day and block the cold wind? Or would that be a wasted effort?

The cold (I say cold, but TL is not _that_ cold) shouldn't kill your fish, it slows their metabolism, they won't eat as much, and what they do eat won't be converted to body mass as efficiently as when it's warm.

You have a big tank, so I think the temp probably won't change that much overnight.
Make some tests at first light and just before dusk, that will give you a good idea how big the temp swing is.

Your pond should probably be covered in some way anyway, Tilapia are frisky buggers, when they get a bit bigger, they will jump out, for sure!

My tillapia jump when they are new to the tank. But when getting bigger no jump at all. May be better water quality.

When they jump will they clear 16 inch sides above water level? Mine flip a lot now.

15 dead today. I had my wife question her brother about the fish. My brother in law purchased a smaller size fingerling the last time because he got 80 fish to the bag instead of 40 like he did the first time. So my fish are younger and weaker as one of the reasons for more deaths. That is why I got 320 fish when I only ordered 150. I suppose he was trying to be helpful.

Education time - what is the meaning of:

Barra is this some type of fish?

IBC means what?

CHIFT PIST System is what - please explain.

UNISEAL - means what?

How long before top teem breed for the first time - how old will they be? How often do they breed? At what stage should I add two male catfish as predators to control the population of the pond? Should the catfish be fingerlings or larger fish? Between harvesting fish and the predator I hope to keep around 300 fish in the pond at any one time in various stages of growth. My wife and I eat on average three to four good size tilapia a week. I eat fish almost every meal except breakfast but I have been known to eat fish for breakfast.

16 inches? easily ;)
Barra = Barrmundi, Sea Bass
IBC = Intermediate Bulk Container, basically a cubic container used to transport all kinds of liquid around.
CHIFT/PIST = Constant Height in Fish Tank / Pump in Sump Tank
Uniseal is some kind of PVC bulk head connector (I think)

Also I think Tab Tim will start breeding around 3 -4 months.
How often do they breed? - All the time, professional AQ people in TL never have females in the pond, they eat too much when pregnant.
It will cost you more in food to get a female to plate size than it would to buy one from the market.

Barramundi = Pla Ka Pong ปลากระพง
IBC Intermediate bulk container , usually 1000L , price in thailand ~ 3000 baht.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermedia ... _container
CHIFT PIST Constant Height in Fish Tank Pump In Sump Tank. Sometime call CHOP, Constant Height One Pump
In this system fish tank is highest water flow down from FT to GB then sump, Pump in sump.
This type of system you have to have sump. but strong point are
-Pump in clean water less cloging.
-If something wrong water is still in pump. water flow from FT by SLO, Solid Lifting Overflow

My wife finally got thru to the people who sell the Master Test Kit. They no longer import them and the next best product is out of stock for the time being. They also no longer accept master card. Either tomorrow afternoon after I go to VFW meeting or Friday I will do a real search of Korat.
