Steve is your pump on a timer, or continuous flow. I can't get my head around using autosiphon's rather than EB's method without having a smaller pump on continuous flow?

A better approach might be to use a float switch (I made one using a piece of suitably carved PS foam and a mercury tilt switch) and relay to turn a pump on whenever the top tank isn't full.

mmm, not the best option

A safer alternative is to by a "reed switch" from an electronics place like jaycar, they are actually smaller than a mercury switch and all you have to so is incorporate a small magnet into your "float on a rod"

If you found the mercury a year later, it doesn't seem so bad.

Except that kids sitting on the carpet may have been in direct contact with mercury
