Question for the Yanks:

How big are these things when you catch them in the wild, and does anyone know how they compare to crawdads? (Also called crayfish.)

The crawfish, or crawdaddies, or if you are really a local, you call them Mud Bugs, can get up to 5-6 inches. The most common size is 3 to 4 inches. No real compition to what you folks have.

Bugger. I always get jealous of you Aussies and your yabbies. We don't have anything like that here. just fresh water crabs of which I have one keeping my sump tidy. Guess I should get it a buddy so they can breed. Can salt water crayfish live in slightly saline ap water?

Not that I have any crayfish at this time but it seems to me that what this competition needs is a handicap for everyone who isn't in Australia. :)

Quick question. Where can youget yabbies or marron in Perth and which would go better. Have two half blue barrels( not lengthways) and was looking to stock them. Any ideas on density as I want them happy?
Cheers and nice pics people!

I am coming to Perth next weekend and could drop off a bucket of yabbies for the right price. :drunken:

They aren't blue but you can choose size, sex etc...

Are the blue ones a different species, or is more related to environment, (water and sand conditions etc)? I have noticed some very blue aquarium yabbs and ones from murky clay farm dams tend to be fairly brownish.

The yabbies just change colour based on environment as far as I know. Kept them for many years in my teens, aquarium ones color up over time. My friend bought adults at sydney fish market that were almost white, they turned blue in aquarium.
