My bluegill tend to hit the food with a splash. I guess it may depend on how hungry they are though.

They are difficult to see in a black tank I must admit but the Catfish can be hard to see in the black tanks too. That's been my biggest problem with the aquaponics I think, it's always so hard to see the fish in my systems.

I can get yellow rainbow trout (West Virginia variant) from a nearby hatchery, would be easy to see those!

Looks cool! Will be interested to hear how they do for you. No chance of doing trout down here. If I'm not willing to heat my water for a month a year to do tilapia, no way I'm gonna chill water for 8 months of the year to do Trout.

Nice, neat, I like.

Only problem, now I keep singing to myself:
"Cashtown Greenhouse 8 Feet Long,
Doo Dah, Doo Dah..."
8-)

So this past weekend I got the outside skin on, re-did the furring strips to hold the plastic down and stained them to look better. The greenhouse film is old and wrinkly and not too transparent but it was free, and I might try smoothing the wrinkles out with a hair dryer mayber. Also built an I-beam from three 2x4s to support the floor over the water. Many details yet to be done and I only have time on the weekends for any of it. Took down the troughs and will be moving them to the back of of the greenhouse, but have to either get longer boards or extend them somehow so they are 9' long instead of 7'. I'm never going to use the zinc-style long screws again, as three of their heads stripped when trying to get the screws out, grr.

In-laws came through with a marine battery for air backup for trout, and also some money for Xmas to buy some fish or food too! This weekend going to try the battery with the UPS.

The floor is covered in clear marine spar varnish, we'll see if that lasts through the Spring when we plan to move to a new house. None of the boards are treated, they are all untreated pine due to budget constraints.

I am going to use window winterizing film for an inner skin, but that stuff really tears easily, will need to hold it down with the double-sided tape it comes with or some kind of thin furring strips. It is very clear though, much more than the greenhouse film.

To protect the plants from the wind and frost, cold rains, etc. Keep them from totally freezing hopefully. I will add heaters to the water to keep it above say 40 at the coldest times - I have lots of heaters from the tilapia days. The huge water mass alone should keep things alive. I've always needed more of a head start on the Spring and this will really deliver that finally.

Cool,
I find that heat loss is reduced if you have a second layer, and even less if the pocket is air tight..
