Hi all,

I have had an issue with my IBC system and it has leaked most of the water out of the FT. I need to refill it but I am concerned about putting heaps of tap water straight back into the FT. There is only about 20cm of water left in the IBC. Can someone please tell me if I need to fill another container with water first before putting it into the FT and how long does the water need to be left in the sun?

Add the water slowly Jon, I do know of others that have had a hsm similar to yours. I really think you need to get some more water in there if you have fish. Perhaps add some pool salt to help the fish -1ppt.

So perhaps I can add 50l each hour? I do have 15 SP in the tank. They are still alive and look ok but I am concerned about them. I will try to get some pool salt today. Thanks Faye.

Ok, so I'm going to fill a plastic container with tap water, leave it in the sun for 4 hours and then add it to the fish tank and repeat until the tank has been refilled.

Note to all. If you have an AP setup, never let a beagle anywhere near it! They will destroy it!!

On a short term add air to the current water..
- Have you fixed the leak...

- Do you have access to a carbon filter.. add small amounts of water as soon as you can..

Long Term..
If you have a spare IBC.. use it to hold water that has an Air stone running all the time.. This is your top up water for your system..

Thanks for the reply mate.

I do have me of those Brita filters on my tap which is a carbon filter which I could use to partially clean the water before putting it into the FT. I don't have an air pump in the FT but I am still running my pump which drops out of the GB into the FT in an attempt to keep the DO levels high.

I do also have a second IBC but I've not done anything with it yet. Good idea to have some top up water ready to go.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info SV.

I will try a combination of leaving some water out during the day and getting some filtered water out of my Brita filter to gradually refill the FT. Luckily there was just enough water left in there this morning to keep the fish alive (although probably rather stressed). I'll just have to watch my levels carefully as I continue to refill the FT.

When I was setting up my chilly tank in the shed I ran a test to see how well trout could handle water straight from the tap. PH was the same and I made sure I had plenty of aeration.

Filled tank straight from the tap, added trout and monitored. Next day --- dead.

So filled chilly tank again, aerated for a few days, added trout ---- still alive to date.

Thanks for sharing Charlie. I am going to be topping up the tank very slowly over the coming days to avoid introducing hard tap water too quickly to the fish. I'm not sure if SP would be any more resilient that trout, but I'm not about to chance it.
