Very impressive growth rates! Nice consistent sizes and very healthy looking indeed. Every pool in the world should be converted without further ado! Imagine... the oceans would be saved and the chlorine companies would all go bust

My brother has been nattering about converting their pool. How big is your bio filter, and whats the medium in there?

It's funny... when I was a kid I had a repetitive dream about our swimming pool having fish in it.

Thanks Brian :D
Yes, we agree with everyone converting pools! We can still swim with the fish, so why not!!
The bio filter is approx 2m long, 50cm high and about 70cm wide. It is divided into two compartments and filled with 2-3 layers of sponge. The pump runs 24/7, but with an Oase ecopump it is pretty sustainable (and worth it to get such a good supply of fish!!)

It may be tricky to use our method if the pool is very deep, ours is only a metre deep....but this is what we did....
We tied chain along the leading edge of the net, and dragged it down the sides and along the bottom of the pool, then up the other end (while securing the stationary end with bricks (see pic). Then we knew the fish were above the net and Mack, who was in the pool, brought it all back again and we all gathered up the net and lifted it out. We knew there were less than 17 (if there had been the full 50 we wouldn't have been able to lift and would have used a scoop net once we had them contained.

Great pics!
They went from 500g to over 1kg in just 2 months, very impressive.

Will you be putting Barra in straight away?

Love your system by the way

Well, we had a surprise today when we saw barramundi number 11 swimming in the pool...all alone! We thought we had only 10 left of the original 20, but we were wrong!! So, the patent catching system was used once more, and this time we remembered to photograph it. All went well with the catching, though it had obviously been a bit knocked about by our efforts last week. Note the viewer in the pool- this is great to check on the fish and pump etc!

Ever try using a cast net? :)) I even used mine in an IBC tote lol

We did think of it...how did it go? We have an odd shaped pool so that put us off the idea, but would be interested in it!

We have decided to give perch a go now, as much as we do enjoy the trout! We may change our minds....who knows! but we have had trout and barra for 3 years now and would like to try keeping perch all year round-several advantages such as not needing to worry about the temperature, getting every fish out, eating the algae that tends to build up when it is sunny...
Not as exciting as the trout, but we have heard a lot about how nice the perch are to eat!
We already have the perch fingerlings in an IBC, ready to go into the pool when we are 100% positive we have every last trout out!!

Freoboy, here are some pics taken today of our filter system. The Oase eco-pump is in the centre of the more circular part of the pool, with a pipe going each way to each of the ornamental fish. These provide aeration for that part of the pool. The pipe on the right of the picture, to the fish, also goes through a UV filter to help purify the water as we still want to swim. The pipe on the left goes to the main biofilter with a small pipe leading to the other ornamental fish. Both fish and the biofilter have separate taps to enable us to alter the flow as we need to. All up, the filtration system cycles 11,000 litres per hour, 24/7. The biofilter is at the back of the pictures, and is made of fibreglass with a fibro cover. The biofilter is divided into two sections, the left has the inlet and the right has the outlet, and there is sponge material inside. We have covered the outlet with a banksia bark section to disguise it somewhat!! Let me know if you want more detail!!!

That's great, thanks! I'll have a look for some internal shots, but it's great to know you didn't need any super pumps if aeration for trout :)
