I know the thing about digging hole's..

I have a mix of sandy soil to 30cm's.. then a sand/clay layer and final the rock hard clay...

the Clay is a pain when you need to dig post hole's..

I'm dreading when I start my Large fish Pond....

Going to pick up some 600mm pvc pipe tomorrow.

I've also got 5mm plastic mesh.

So I am actually making an Airlift Bio Filter.

The K1 you have needs to be Treated with PP before you use it..
the K1 will take to long to grow bacteria if you don't..

It has a film on it from when they manufacture it..

Thanks for the tip. I'll investigate.

I'd rather not do anything too fancy.

VLT if you want the bacteria to colonise your filter then you need to do it or it will take along time to make them work..

It will happen but will take time..

I've been reading that there are 2 schools of thought.

I'm someone that would avoid chemicals if there was any doubt or question about the need.

Happy to wait for the bacteria to come. I also have the best kickstart. I can top up wig my old system water.

First rule of AP. PATIENCE.
