Hey Desert Rat, we also have a laguna 16000, it has been in the big tank for about a year with no problems :) (and a reduced power bill compared to the previous pump! :) )

Thanks Axl looking forward to the new pump
If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay?

That pump should be around $450 delivered...I dont have the time to look right now, but $500 is still not too bad. They are a very high quality pump.

actually, i can be bothered to find it:

http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/catalogue_products.php?prodID=4237&catID=13

It was on the first page of a google search. $450 and $7.50 delivery.

A couple of Questions If'n you don't mind pleas folks... Have looked through a few threads including this one & can't find an answer for them as of yet...
Background...
I have started to put together an IBC CHIFT PIST system...
600L Sump
900L FT
3 x 300L (without grow media) GB's...
I would like a pump with a float switch that can run 24/7... I like the safety net of a float switch in case of a plumbing HSM... From what I have read the "sump style" pumps cant take the constant running... Is there any models that will take the load & pump about 4000Lph ???
The other option is a pump with a float switch connected.. Has anyone set up a pump with a plug & go or hard wired float switch ???
There is one pump that tweaked my interest

I'm really impressed with my "Hozelock Cyprio Cascade 4000 Submersible Pond Pump" it has been running great since I got it back. Added some flexible pipe and no more problems.

http://www.rockaroundtheblock.com.au/pr ... ID=7&cID=2
I like the "Automatically resettable thermal cut-out protection if pump runs dry" feature as I can set the pump a bit higher so the Yabbies won't dry out if HSM occurs...
Sorry about the long post & thanks all...

**wanders off to trawl the threads**

That one is ok, but hideously expensive for your requirements. Give me 5 to link you a better option.

This:

http://www.rockaroundtheblock.com.au/product.asp?pID=911&cID=83

is much better for the price, and uses less power.

One of these:

http://www.rockaroundtheblock.com.au/product.asp?pID=207&cID=37

will enable you to shut the pump down in the event of low water....personally however, design your system so that the is no chance whatsoever, that you will encounter a low water level event.

Bugger. Same price and lph as mine, but 25w less.

Still I cant complain. My pump hasn't missed a beat since I installed in in March/April and it is running 24x7. (hope I haven't jinxed it now)

Would this be good pump for my setup?

Flotec 1/4 HP sump pump model# FP0S1800A

I will have a 120 gallon FT, 75 gallon growbed, and a sump tank under the growbed which is about three feet away from the FT. The GB will be on a simple timed flood and drain system and the FT will have a SLO.

The pump is advertised to pump 1,620 gallons per hour at 10 ft of lift.

If this isn't a good pump, what type of gallons per minute should I be looking for?

Thanks

Something that does around 200 gallons at 10 foot will be fine. The flotec pump is way oversized, and wasting power.

Thanks for the tip. It did seem big to me but I had a good deal on craigslist over here so I thought about it. :)

Any pumps or manufacturers you could recommend for this size AP system? Right now, as a newbie, I'm a little lost with the inundation of so much new info.

For one thing, I thought it might be better to have a stronger pump with a flood and drain since the pump would only be working part of the time and the conventional wisdom is the water in the FT needs to be turned over at least once an hour. With a 200 gallon/hour at ten foot head, wouldn't that be less than what I need?

It would still be ok, depending on your amount of fish, and feeding rate. Aeration would be your biggest problem.

Look for pumps that use a vortex impellor.

Thanks for the suggestion OB. I was interested in the Laguna max flo, but this Aqua Nova Eco pump looks even better on paper than the Laguna, using far less electricity for a comparable output at zero head.

Hopefully the specs are true to the box in real-life usage. I was unable to find the charts stating the output at different heads, not even on the manufacturer's website. Does anyone know where to get them??

However, I did find that the warranty is only 1 year in Australia, based on the manufacturer's site:
http://www.novaeuro.com/en/docs/NMP.pdf

Laguna is far higher than that at 3 years. I know that in general you get what you pay for, so just wondering if the 50 dollars I save on the Aqua Nova would be worth it, as I've heard quite a few people having pump issues (all kinds of brands, not Aqua Nova) after 2+ years.

Do you realise that you won't be pumping at 0 head?
